  • 2010 Canadian Open - last call for entries!

Registrations close for the Canadian Open tomorrow, July 6. I was at the site meeting which Larry attended and I completely agree that we have a fantastic venue to match the wonderful week that will be the Canadian Open. Here are some of the highlites in my view:

    1. All equipment is now being provided! Digital clocks on every board.
    2. Terrific international competition - 9 GM's and 7 IMs and plenty of norm chances!
    3. Some great side events - GM simuls including one by our own Mark Bluvshtein to benefit the Olympic team. Alex Shabalov will be giving a 960 (aka Fischer Random) simul. Kitchener's FM Hans Jung will be giving a blindfold simul. Also GM lectures, blitz and bughouse events.
    4. FIDE Arbiter seminar for those who wish to develop their knowledge and skills as an Arbiter.
    5. A $32,000 guaranteed prize fund with generous class prizes.
    6. Awesome banquet and closing ceremonies on the waterfront.

Attendance is already over 210 players. Don't forget to sign up by tomorrow! As your Chief Arbiter I look forward to working with everyone next week.

The MonRoi site shows only 176 entries for the CO. Assuming your number of 210+ is correct, this is not a good advertisement for a site that supposedly offers instant information - i.e. live games.

I got a question from an interested player:
What are registration options for the last minute entries?
("How can I register for the Canadian Open? I think mailing is not anymore an option because of the deadline on July 6.")

        thnx.

Are the organizers considering deadline extension until July 8 to accommodate late registrants?

I'm not one of the organizers. All I know is what I read in their flyer and it looks like registrations are cut-off this Tuesday. If they decide to extend their deadline, I am sure they will let people know on this forum.

Even with 10 rounds and more GMs, some one-section Canadian Opens were hard-pressed to provide norm chances. Last time I looked, the 2010 Canadian Open had 9 rounds.

This difference used to be crucial, because FIDE norm rules required that each norm retain 8 games. With 10 rounds you could drop 2 wins against "norm killers", while with 9 you could only drop one.

OTOH, more players every year have FIDE ratings, which is good, but still a couple of opponents rated up to 2000 can be a bit of a norm killer.

In a one section Canadian Open of 10 rounds, the norm chance was the "rocket" variation where you won all your games for 5 or 6 rounds and then received the necessary strong pairings to maintain a norm level.

There can be exceptions: AFAIR, the 10-round 2005 Canadian Open in Edmonton bucked the odds and produced, AFAIR, two norms. Otherwise, norms in Canada have required (multiple sections, e.g. the Quebec Open or the NBIO), or (10 rounds and specialized pairing systems). In 2003 with 10 rounds and a specialized pairing system, the guy who eventually got an IM norm managed to do so even after losing his first two games.

Did I notice that the 2010 Canadian Open will have a hyper-accelerated pairing system? The 1976 Canadian Open, coincidentally also in Toronto, had a hyper-accelerated pairing system, though the goal then was merely to provide the best competition among 400+ entrants; norms in open events were not on the radar. The hyper-acceleration itself worked OK, but when the acceleration came off (after AFAIR round 4), the leader was due to play a "B" or "C" player ... and then likely another in the next round, depending upon game results!

The story was covered in the CFC magazine of the time. But let's look forward. Tell us how it will work out in 2010 !

                    Thank you.

Rd. 1 starts Sat. at 6:00 PM. Entries have formally closed now . I expect the fiinal registration list should soon be posted.

In the 2010 CO, my U 2000 Class Prize Group ( it's one big swiss ) has 49 players as of July 4 – and where am I?.............. # 49 of course ! I’m rated 1800 dead on. Nothing like a challenge – and I can’t go lower, even if I lose every game !

Here is my opposition this year on the last pre-registration list:

Ratings might change after processing of rated tournaments (e.g., Hart House)

I thought the third quartile goes from over 1900 to under 1700. Am I missing something here?

I'm not a fan of these kind of pairings.

I don't know if the Class prizes have anything to do with the accelerated pairing divisions... All I have seen mentioned is that "accelerated pairings will be used", but I don't recall seeing any mention of how many rounds of accelerated pairings will be employed.

                              Re: 2010 Canadian Open - Hyper-Accelerated Pairings

                              Hi Kerry:

I heard somewhere that they were going to use Hyper-accelerated pairings, like were used in 2007 in Ottawa.

This is what I understand ( and I haven't a clue if I'm even in the ballpark ):

                              1. In Rd. 1 - the top quarter get 3 ghost points; the second quarter get 2 ghost points; the third quarter get 1 ghost point. The bottom quarter don't get a ghost point.

                              2. Everyone is paired within their point group.

                              3. In Rd. 2, everyone who got a ghost point loses 1 ghost point. Again paired within the point group.

                              4. In Rd. 3, those who got 2 ghost points or more, lose 1 ghost point. Again, paired within the point group.

                              5. In Rd 4, the top quarter lose their last ghost point. Pairings now back to normal for Rd. 4.

Anyone know if I have a clue what I'm talking about??
