Re: FIDE Time Control not available on Saitek clock

I noticed that none of the built-in Tournament times for the
Saitek Competition Pro clocks (FIDE 1, FIDE 2 etc.) correspond
to the actual time control posted for the tournament.

      e.g.:

      FIDE 1 40 moves in 90 min + 30 secs/move, then
      remainder in 15 min + 30 secs/move

      FIDE 2 40 moves in 100 min + 30 secs/move, then
      remainder in 30 min + 30 secs/move

The fact there isn't a built-in FIDE TC for the Canadian Open's TC of:

"40 moves in 90 minutes and 30 minutes for the remainder of the
game (with 30 second increments from move 1)"

makes me wonder if a mistake was made in stating this TC.

Should we then set the clocks ourselves using the customized
      user control mode?

Re: FIDE Time Control not available on Saitek clock

The clocks are older than the currently favoured FIDE time control, hence it is not included as a default setting.

Re: Clocks supplied at Canadian Open

So are these clocks being supplied the old Saitek ones?

Are they going to be set for us? We should at least be able
to check they've been set properly.

                Re: Canadian Open pairings revised.

David Itkin posted to this effect on another thread. He is slated to play on Bd. 39 at the moment. I think Hal's response was that the organizers communicated nothing about a Rd. 1 bye to him when they forwarded the list of registrants. I think he said he was going to check with them. Nothing further was then posted on this.

I'd suggest you tell David to e-mail Hal directly right away ( halbond@sympatico.ca )

But given the round starts in 8 hours, I don't know if Hal will still be picking up his e-mails now before the round. But better try.

                  2nd round Canadian Open pairings

Second Round pairings have been posted

                  http://monroi.com/2010-cocc-pairings.html

Maurice Smith, Michael Sutton and two women smoothly handled giving out the registration kits. The light blue touranment golf-shirts are great.

Only 1 last-minute entrant turned away and I don't think that there were any wins on forfeits. Still problems with cellphones ringing -- you lose. The politician's opening speech mentioned that chess teaches kids to think before you act. Hal and Brian Fiedler leooked great in a suit and Hal's two assistants stood out in their referee shirts.

Also standings, no big upsets, but many draws.

The playing play is air-conditioned and spacious with soft chairs and ice water. I posted a display on the early history of the Canadian Open and David Cohen posted the portraits of the members of the Canadian Chess Hall of Fame.

Players haven't yet learned to get coffee and juice from the variety store one building east. Although the outside doors lock and it's a pain to cross the street to the hotel, up to the walkway and back in to the playing hall.

Lots of people on the steet going to the island or harbourfront. Choice of hot dogs or soft ice cream. But noise doesn't seep in to the playing hall, except when the fire alarm went off ....

Many people looking forward to tomorrow morning's simult by GM Mark Bluvshtein, the ches960 simul on Monday and people even signing up for the FIDE Arbiter's seminar.

                    Re: 3rd Canadian Open pairings.

                    3rd round pairings are up

                    http://monroi.com/2010-cocc-pairings.html

Couple more late entrants turned away, they thought rounds were at 2 pm so couldn't make it, came by to watch. Several visitors to a Canadian chess tournament for the first time are entering the simults.

There were only a few chessplayers in the lobby bar and many orange- dressed fans were disappointed.

The playing hall ran out of ice water by 8pm.

                    Some stats:

                    49 seniors over 50
                    33 juniors under 18 plus

Surprised to see only 5 Quebecers showed up...It's only about 5 1/2 hours drive from Montreal! I guess for many players (including me) one week-long tournament in the summer is enough, and they have the Quebec Open over there in a few weeks. I wonder how many Ontarians will play in that event?

Technically there was one. My first round opponent Ian Finlay was involved in a car accident. The TDs rescored it as a first round full point bye for myself and a half point bye for Ian. I did sit and watch his time silently tick down for forty minutes or so.
