Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Of course, some of us are watching the Canadian Open from home. It's great. Email messages and comments can fly back and forth.
In case you're wondering, we are fans of Lawrence. Yesterdays loss was a heart breaker. We had been hoping there was a draw there. Is was not to be and today is another game. (We is myself and the person with whom I was exchanging emails.)
Of course, I always watch lower rated players playing the French Winawer against their higher rated opponents with the predictable results. One of the games being shown yesterday was looking good for black but in the end it was not to be. It's not always a bad choice because some players with white can't handle it. In such a case it's best for white to avoid that by playing the Trash or Tarrasch. 3. Nd2.
Of course, I'm always rooting for the Canadian players. Let's send the foreigners home with bad memories of long games and lost opportunties.
Hi Gary - I am another one of the watch from home crowd, but am actually getting into Toronto for rounds 3 and 4. Pop down to spectate and I will buy you a beer.

Probably I won't make it down. Problems walking these days. I think I read you come in from Port Hope. You'll be driving about 2 minutes from where I live on the way. Are you going for the AGM?
Decades of directing postal chess events and the chess lawyering that goes with it is hard on sanity. Other than that, it's all entertainment.
Round 2. Checked the games on Monroi to see who Lawrence Day was playing. For some strange reason his game wasn't live. For us older guys Lawrence holds the main interest. He's the one we want to watch. Get with it, organizers. Give us what we want!
In any case, I settled on watching the Samsonkin game. Artiom played the romantic King's Gambit. I like to see the young masters branch into these type of openings and I kind of enjoyed the game. I think players who broaden their games in this manner tend to stay in the game more years. Interesting attacking chess and a wide range of openings and defences keeps the game from getting boring.
Anyhow, here are the notes I quickly made after the game ended. This should cut and paste to your Fritz.

I too was looking for Lawrence's game, but it was not live... perhaps he or his opponent balked at using the Monroi device? In any case, I suppose I get what I paid for. It is great to be able to follow some of the games (or replay them or just grab the .pgn files all the same).
I noticed other threads about the phantom points and accelerated pairings and it seems clear that some of the players themselves may have problems understanding the pairings! I am coming around to the point of view (I believe Frank Dixon mentioned this) that one giant section - despite accelerated or fudged pairings - is NOT the way to go...
Round 3 was a bit of a let down. There were a lot of mismatches so I didn't watch for long. Ended up watching the Home Run Derby of the Baseball All Star Game.
I don't know if the problem is the pairing system or the rating system and I don't really care.
GM McShane dispatched a Winawer in fine fashion.
Personally, I think the Winawer should be enshrined in the Chess Hall of Fame. A proper inscription would be "Can't win with it, Can't lay off playing it."

The drive downtown is not appealing. If it was a easy location with handy parking I'd have played.
I gave some thought to taking a room at the hotel for my wife and myself, but didn't want to board the dogs in a kennel.
