Re: Canadian Open comments (from a non-participant)

If I recall correctly, there were 250 (plus or minus a couple) entries to the Open at the "absolute deadline" date. How come there are over 260 now? (a friend of mine was denied an on-site entry - since he only found out about the event just after the "deadline")?

I could never see the point of the 'no on-site entries' rule... I know it is very useful to know in advance who all the players are so that the pairings don't get screwed up.... wait a minute. There goes that theory. ;) Just a smile on a hot afternoon.

          http://monroi.com/2010-cocc-players.html

This list has/had the pre-registrants - updated a couple of times a week.

125 boards were paired on Thurs. July 8.

According to the crosstable, there were 15 byes granted in round 1. Were all those requested in advance - or did some belong to on-site entries?

Yes. Hmm. Answer too short. Once in North Bay the CFC had let themselves run out of NCR, so the top section was played on FQE stationery, much to their mirth, I hope.

I did find a forum post, with partial details, by Bob Armstrong from February, but in general the full and official internet word on the 2010 CO seemed to be available only in a PDF file. Does anybody else find that a tiny bit self-limiting? This amazes me, but a poet wanted to find his lost work in some scans I had done, but his computer was unable to help him with the very plain, readable-in-Sumatra-or-Adobe, PDF files that I provided. He had to buy a new computer! This is a niggle, a very minor point, but not everyone who is connected does PDF.

They were mainly players who had paid at a Strategy Game store and the details needed to be passed on by hand. There has also been a few floaters created like Stephen Boyd.

How can a Canadian Open not have carbon carby scoresheets? That's dumb. Would never use one of those Monroi things. I've seen multiple times there be some issue with one, so a TD will come over in the middle of the game and start tampering with it. What the eff?

Are you saying that despite everything that has been said on this board that they are still going without them ? That would be not only dumb, but blind and deaf.

I dunno if they are or not. I'm not playing in the tournament. I'm also not a map maker... Per se...

As originally advertised: Equipment : Please bring chess sets and digital clocks, if you have them.

But this is now a moot point. Seems that the organizers had to change a few things on the fly this year.

And to throw away all specially printed scoresheets? ;)

Finished top-board games' results: cards were used later. (a photo to follow)

I went back for the final day of the tournament. Seems the organizers made an effort to solve most of the problems - score cards on the top tables, all sorts of information on the walls (results, prizes, byes, ...), and poor Zeljka running around trying to fix the Monroi displays. It was a nice round to watch.

(but Toronto has come a long way since the 1970's when one organizer charged the players for scoresheets)
I was wondering if we will have the same conditions at the quebec open ?
