  • Kleinman wins the 2010 Ontario Closed - 5.5 /7

Michale Kleinman achieved his first title as the 2010 Ontario Closed chess champion. He scored 4 wins, 2 draws and a bye in the first round. With this result, he joins the group of young players from Ontario who have real chances to become GMs ? in the future (Noritsyn, Samsonkin, Sapozhnikov, Calugar, Yuanling, Gusev).

This tournament was known as the Canadian Amateur Open section last year and won by Roman Sapozhnikov with 5.5/7. Unfortunately, Sapozhnikov decided to participate in the 2010 Quebec Open, together with Calugar. These 2 young players could have added more challenge to MK had they played.

Congratulation to Kleinman and wish him more success in the coming tournaments !!

Yes Michael Kleinman was in top form and played well - sharp ideas in the opening and excellent tactical vision - I relaxed against him and he found the stunning Nc3! embarassing me and I thought about resigning - fortunately I played on even though my position was an ugly mess and survived to the ending. 4 of my first 5 games were the last in the tournament to end and it took its toll and I had a hard time finishing winning positions against Vlad Drkulec and Josh Guo. Tomas Krnan was the pretournament favorite (by almost 200 rating points) and started well but was taken to task by ambitious opponents. He needed to win in the last round as White against Steve Demmery but could only hold the draw - congratulations Steve! Anyways congratulations Michael on being a very deserving Ontarion Champion!
          - and a special congratulations to Ralph Deline as Canadian Seniors Champion! I really enjoyed the tournament although I ran out of gas twice. Thanks to Hal and Patrick and crew for another enjoyable event.

Michael also took home the Lawrence Day Game Prize, which we informally referred to as the brilliancy prize, for his win over Krnan. If you have yet to see that game, I encourage you to take it in - it certainly fits the billing for courage and innovation.

It should also be noted that Kleinman's game against Krnan is flawless when examined with a computer, 100% agreement all the way through after the g4 move. Looks like Tomas ran into some home cooking. Trouble is the food was toxic.

M.K. improved his position with 14.0-0-0 and he crushed the master.

The novelty in this position was actually played by the IM, whose 14. ...hg5 is the new move, challenging White to prove that he has a strong attack.

It seems that the knight on g5 is a "toxic knight" (from Mavros -lol)

The previous move played here is 14. ...a5, where Black lost.

Strong alternatives to 14. 000 are 14.d6 and 14.Ne6 where white won both games.

Note that GM Kevin Spraggett and Eric Hansen preferred King safety with 11.00, instead of the aggressive 11.g4.

Interesting stuff guys. I see that Michael has earned this victory in more ways than one. The Scandinavian is incredibly popular right now in the Toronto chess scene with Egorov, Samsonkin, Saposhnikov, Krnan, Martchenko, Ferriera, Fillipovich (I think) and others playing it.

Mavros you fit right in to that crowd. Lowest rated and you scored 50% and performed over 2200! Congratulations and keep it up and I expect to see you at master soon.
