  • 2010 Battle of Alberta

The annual bloodfest takes place between the north and the south teams here in Alberta this Saturday. The teams consist of a dozen players and the format calls for two rounds against the same opponent.

We will be broadcasting the top 3 boards live and the games will also be available for download. You can view the roster on the website.

If you are interested in trash talk, there's some of that going on as well. Visit these links for that.

The teams are evenly matched. The average ratings are 2188 for the South vs. 2201 for the North. The South are the defending champions but anything can happen.

This annual event takes place on the Mason-Dixon line, otherwise known as Red Deer. Spectators are welcome. The site is the Red Deer Lodge. The winning team takes the trophy for the year.

The South strikes first as Roy Yearwood defeats Vlad Rekhson with the white pieces.

At the half way point, the South is on top with 6.5-5.5. Round 2 should begin at 3 pm Mountain time. Follow the link for games and results. I should have the first round games up in an hour or so, after I eat lunch.

            The South wins!

That makes it two years in a row for the South. The final score was 14-10. You can check out the standings on the website. I should have all the games up either later tonight or sometime tomorrow.

              Re: Alberta Chess Report

I just had a quick look at a recent ACR and I was pleasantly stunned at the high quality of the issue. Keep up the good work.

Hafiz and I are old players from the ECC, so I hope he won't mind me asking - why was he on board 4 for the south? He's the lowest rated player on the team.

Looks like superior depth crushed the North this time - top 6 boards score was 6-6, bottom 6 was 8-4 south.

Hafiz replaced Knut Nevan. When a player drops out at the last moment, the replacement replaces that player regardless of the board the are on, as opposed to everybody moving up a board and the replacement coming in at board 12, or something like that. I think it's been like that for a long time...
