General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I might regret asking, but I will anyway. Who is Eric Hansen? Checking with my friends Google and Wikipedia, I get the following choices:
Eric Hansen (sportswriter), American sportswriter
Eric Hansen (travel writer), American author
Eric Hansen (wrestler), Danish wrestler
Eric Hansen (singer), Solo Contemporary Folk Singer-Singwriter
Given the eclectic nature of your previous posts to ChessTalk, I'm guessing #4 because of the fact he has written whimsical songs about frogs :). Ben, either I'm clueless (quite possible as my parent's often accused me of being so) or you've raised the art of making obscure posts to Chesstalk to a new level.

hi gang i just got back from a lengthy meeting with the other members of the organising committee
we have all decided that eric hansen movie night should be transformed into a full-fledged eric hansen day
appropriate meals and movies for such a day have been decided but we need help on the specifics. costumes, speech (what are some fun applicable catch phrases to throw in each others' gullets ***MUST BE FAMILY-APPROPRIATE AS SEVERAL YOUNG CHILDREN WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE***), decorations, party favours???? maybe some quick games to play in between flicks. such as "pin the tail on the hansen" but that's stupid, we need ideas that are not stupid. ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS ARE APPRECIATED (but try your best to be less stupid than the hansen-tail idea)
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)
I'm sure Ben can suggest some chess related hip hop as background music between films. Here's what we came up to play before the rounds at the Canadian Open:
CHESS ROCK
Streetheart - Here Comes The Night
Yes - I've Seen All Good People
Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
Max Webster - Check
Kottonmouth Kings - Checkmate
Crystal Castles - Chess Mess
Queen - Killer Queen
Billy Haley and his Comets - Rock Around The Clock
CHESS MELLOW
Queen - Play The Game
Chess (Musical) - Anthem
Chess (Musical) - One Night in Bangkok
Elton John - The King Must Die
Bob Seger - Night Moves
Dire Straits - Telegraph Road
CHESS SOUL
Van Morrison and Them - Here Comes The Night
Sonny Charles and the Checkmates - Black Pearl
The Checkmates - Love Is All I Have To Give
Aretha Franklin - Think
Etta James - Loser's Weepers
Blues Brothers - Peter Gunn Theme
R.E.M. - Endgame
Couldn't find an MP3 of, or didn't fit in musically:
Suzanne Vegas - Knight Moves
Weezer - Chess
Pink Floyd - Country Song (on movie soundtrack Zabriskie Point, 1970)
Moxy Fruvous - Kasparov vs Deep Blue
Chumbawamba - Spassky Fischer
Annihilator - Knight Jumps Queen
Half Man Half Biscuit - Bad Losers On Yahoo Chess
Didn't make a classical disc, pieces too long.
Didn't make a hip-hop disk, lots of swearing. It might include:
Hip Hop Chess Nation (advice for youth) http://hiphopchess.blogspot.com/2009...abac-reds.html
Jay-Z - This Life Forever
Papoose - Chess
DJ Muggs & the GZA - General Principles
GZA - Queen's Gambit
Rejected as not chess enough:
Prince - Snowman
Bob Segar - Still the Same
Bob Dylan - Only A Pawn In Their Game
John Mayer - My Stupid Mouth
"played a quick game of chess with the salt and pepper"
Bananarama - It Ain't What You Do
Dr. Feelgood - Suzie Q
Lots of songs with chess in the lyrics found at song lyric sites:
Duncan Sheik - Mr. Chess
Our Lady Peace - Ray Kurzweil 1949-97
InMe - Papillon's Stalemate
Nada Surf - Stalemate
"stalemate jump out of a cake"
Smash Mouth - Padrino
"you can be the rook or pawn"
They Might be Giants - Chess Piece Face
"Chess, like love, like music, has the powers to make men happy." Siegbert Tarrasch
I seem to remember there being a song called Deeper Blues, that ChessBase mentioned on their site a long time ago. Do you recall that one, or am I just crazy? I think the lyrics went something like:
The champion's fallen and Deeper Blue is king
I said, the champion's fallen and Deeper Blue is king
There ain't no point to playin' chess no more
Cause it don't mean a thing
Jay-Z - This Life Forever
Papoose - Chess
DJ Muggs & the GZA - General Principles
GZA - Queen's Gambit
bam, jay-z is overrated and that song's not about chess anyway. papoose aight but he has way doper songs
gza/muggs have an entire album together (grandmasters), those are 2 songs off it. gza's 2nd solo (liquid swords) also has a chessboard on the cover 0__o
another chess song: jus allah - chess king <--- kinda the beginning of jus allah's demise, he hit puberty and his voice got too deep ): ): ):
can't think of any others off the top. lots have made chess references (even a savage caucasoid such as necro has), but very few have chess in the title ): >.< O:
but it's all cool dude, we don't really need chess music, the event is not about hansen as a chess player but hansen as a biological entity 0___0 O:
*__*

everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)
I always liked this line in Ready or Not by The Fugees:
I play my enemies like a game of chess, where I rest,
No stress
If you don't smoke sess, lest.
I must confess, my destiny's manifest
In some Goretex and sweats I make treks like I'm homeless
Rap orgies with Porgy and Bess,
Capture your bounty like Elliot Ness, YES
Bless you if you represent the Fu
But I'll hex you with some witch's brew if you're Doo Doo
Voo Doo,
I can do what you do, easy, BELIEVE ME
Frontin' niggas give me hee-bee-gee-bees
So while you're imitating Al Capone
I'll be Nina Simone
And defacating on your microphone.
