  • Anand vs. Touzane - 2001

    Who remembers this shocker?

As one of what I assume to be numerous examples, the following saw a 1951 drop a mate-in-one against a 953:

    1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 4.cxd5 exd5 5.g3 Nf6 6.Nf3 Be7 7.Bg2 0-0 8.0-0 Nc6 9.b3 h6 10.Bb2 a6 11.Rc1 Rb8 12.Kh1 b5 13.dxc5 Bxc5 14.Nxd5 Nxd5 15.Rxc5 Nce7 16.Qc1 Nf5 17.Rd1 Be6 18.Nd4 Qf6 19.Nc6 Qg6 20.Nxb8 Rxb8 21.Bxd5 Bxd5+ 22.Rcxd5 Qe6 23.Qf4 Re8 24.Re5 Qc6+ 25.e4 Nd6 26.Rxd6 Qc8 27.Rf5 Qc2 28.Be5 Qe2 29.Rxf7 Qf1#

So, Anand is certainly nowhere near laying claim to being the victim of the biggest upset of all time. That said, is his game with Touzane a candidate for the biggest upset of a top-ten player in a tournament at standard time controls? I should point out that I am not neglecting Charbonneau's upset over Anand, but he only had to contend with an ~300 point spread, while Touzane was ~400 points back.

Didn't Kevin Gentes beat Yusopov when Yusopov was top 5?

The game to which you are referring is here.

Apparently, Gentes was rated about 2150 CFC at the time, and Yusupov was #3 in the world. Before you mentioned it, I was entirely unaware of this upset. Thanks for sharing!

I imagine there are no instances of players rated ~2000 taking out players in the top 5 of the world - Gentes' result is hard enough to believe. That said, what of the pre-rating era? Were there any notable upsets of this magnitude back then?
