General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
if you are implying that my wishing luck to hansen's future opponents caused him to draw a game that had already been played, you are being absurd. how does that make even a shred of sense? wtfm8????????
Actually I was commenting on you saying that people are stupid to face him in a game of chess when there are people of comparative ability seeing as he drew two games and their are Gm's at the tournament.
haha thanks to ben and the organizing committee. hikaru is right, its not fide rated so a good opportunity to try some new openings. but i will try to put on a better show tomorrow.i'll at least do well in the drinking chess portion.
The game was certainly entertaining to watch live! Things got heated before move 10, pretty rare. I don't know if it was a case of Pascal being more prepared or Hikaru missing something. Even the DGT's were acting up!

I love gambits. They are the romance, creativity and soul of chess. The gambits keep the game from getting old and stale for a player. I wonder if a study has ever been done to determine if gambit players hang around the game longer than those who only play a couple of more solid defences and openings.
As a member of the world famous (maybe I get carried away a bit) Gambiteers Guild, we played a consultation game against a strong player using the white side of the Winckelmann-Reimer Gambit. That gambit seems quite lost for white and is probably only good for speed chess. At the time I was playing board 1 for the Gambiteers Guild but as age has slowed me and I have stepped down to board 2 in the current round.
We had a lot of fun with the game. It had many nice features including an Irish center (tripled c pawns) and ended with a discovered check. Finding and playing that kind of "fluff" can be as much fun as finding nice piece under promotions.
Here is a nice article by my good friend and our team captain Wim van Vugt from The Netherlands.
U watching game live? What about Pascal vs eric, why not 24...Rc4?
Looks to keep exchange ie. 25 Bf6 Bd3 26 Re1 a5 intending ..a1Q. WN could hop into c6 and look "young", but the a-pawn for Black taps Eric out. No fritzpls, Sorry, edit, same result w/ black looking like a korchnoi. White must have spaazzed w/ Bc3 earlier,

I noticed 24. ... Rc4 but when it wasn't played wondered if I'd missed something.

Pascal certainly cut a fine line w/ that extra pawn w rooks; i predict a wild benoni from Teplitski over Charbonneau in last rd tying him for first, but leaving the grenade for Nakamura to hoist:)

I lost my taste for the Benoni. My opponents got in the habit of shoving the "e" pawn down my throat. It leaves a bad after taste. :)

Wrong on that guess for benoni. recently aronian gelfand esp. and topalov play g3, then when black goes for early...b5, play awesome e4 pawn gambits(w/ Bstill on f1). So itmay be essayed at the top more than the French Defence, not your fav, i guess. but Jan (teplitsky) used to play it sharply. Forgot Charrb is e4 player and was due for w. Disappointing rep in their game. If one plays the Archangelsk, then one should be able to transpose to Smyslov w ...h6 instead of ...Re8. Anything else if playing for first place(the copout draw gets him tie for third). Jan has aged....Na5 w/ slightly inferior Chigorin, and likewise for a... Nb8(breyer)How about a ..cd..cd...Nd7 like Naka played in his last rd game(Keres/Karpov)?Forfeit both, i thot Sofia rules were in effect.

Reason: or is that Rentraro/Linares rules? Make them replay Tony
I would like to thank everyone involved with this great event. Seeing some of my best friends (Pascal, Jack) as well as so many friendly people is why western Canada will always have a special place in my heart.
I'd be remiss if I did not mention Jamin Gluckie who ran a fabulous event from start to finish. Jamin also showed Pascal, Jack, Yan and I hospitality as well as the local attractions (Boston Pizza) in Lloydminster.
Since I saw a few comments regarding my game with Pascal yesterday, here's what I have to say about that debacle. I recently played in the Spanish Team Championship in Bilbao, Spain where GM Nigel Short mentioned the Philidor. Alas it did not work out here, but since this was not a Fide rated event, it felt like a good time to experiment!

I like the food... but I've never heard of a Boston Pizza being described as a "local attraction" :D
