  • Shanghai Masters

Shirov won this prestigious tournament in a walk today with 12 points to 7 each for Aronian and Kramnik. Those two had to play off for the second spot in the next event and after splitting the blitz games, Kramnik won in a sloppy Armageddon with pieces flying all over the place.
Thus Kramnik joins Shirov in heading to Bilbao to meet Carlsen and Anand in what promises to be one of the top tournaments of the year.
Fans will recall that Shirov won the MTel Masters a couple of years ago against similar competition. Can he do it again?

This is ridiculous! We need a new Bobby Fischer! Armageddons and blitz games should not be used as a final criteria to decide a winner in top tournaments. It brings a "cool" but shallow image to chess. Big mistake!
