  • Leonid Gerzhoy new Montreal Champion

The IM Leonid Gerzhoy from Toronto is the new Montreal Champion following his last round win of yesterday in the Montreal Open Championship. His final score of 4½ - ½ is the same as GM Bator Sambuev against whom he drew in round four. He narrowly edged him out on the fourth tie-break method, the first three leaving them in a tied deadlock. The fourth method was “Who played with more Blacks ?” (first three :1head-to-head ; 2-cumulative ; 3-Solkoff).

Yuanling Yuan, top female Canadian player, wins the Women’s title (3½ - 1½). Miss Yuan forgot her clock on board 6 yesterday evening. On it « 2007 - Toronto Junior Champion » is engraved. If someone knows where it is now, please contact us at championnatdemontreal@gmail.com.

In the other sections of play the certificates of merit go to Émile Trottier (B : -2000) on tie break, Sylvain Lessard (C : -1600) and the Cadet William Lai (D : -1200 & unr.) ; the latter also wins the Cadet’s bronze medal.

Unofficial standings for all sections : www.echecsmontreal.ca/chom/resultats.htm.

Later this week we will publish, at the same address, the official final standings and prizes. Cheques, medals, etc. will then be mailed out.

Thank you all for your support and participation !

Is he the Montreal Champion, or the Montreal Open Champion?
No matter how big and bad you are, when a two-year-old hands you a toy phone, you answer it.

Since we don't see any Invitational Montreal Championship around this past year or in the near future, we'd say he is the Montreal Champion, period.

As for identifying the strongest chessplayer currently residing in Montreal, our vote would without a doubt go to Bator Sambuev.
