  • 2010 olympiad - Round 2

    Open
    33 Uzbekistan 3 : 4 Canada 53

    Women
    58 Canada 3½ : 4 Kazakhstan 37

Does anybody know the second parameter for pairings? As we (open) are playing team which has only 3 "board" points

I thought it was scored match points. 2 points for match win. 1 point for a match draw. Zero for a loss. The game points for tie break purposes.

Is these pairing by the seedings and match points, ignoring game points?

It looks like some odd combination of game points and initial rankings within match point groups.

I haven't looked at the pairings, but would assume it's teams with 2 match points vs others with 2 match points. They would take into consideration the board colours. The game points don't matter as much.

I haven't looked at the parings and don't have a URL, but pairing by game points instead of match points sounds wrong.

Winning with 4 points is secondary to winning a match. A team captain, once is team has 1 win, would like his other players to at least secure a draw and win the match.

According to the pairing rules at:
          http://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.ht...5&view=article
the 2008 rules were overhauled in 2009. I haven't studied the new rules closely, but at first glance I prefer the 2008 rules, but with correction of the horrible misunderstanding or misprint (which resulted in teams floating down to the next group playing the bottom ranked team in that group, can you believe it? Well, yes, it happened.).

          Anyway:
          10. For pairing of all rounds the teams are ranked in the following order:

          1. Match points
          2. Game points
          3. Ranking number

and then fairly normal Swiss pairings are made. As a result, you'll probably not be meeting a team with the same number of game points any time soon. I.E., Canada would be in the top half of the 1 Match Point group and Uzb. in the bottom half, even though their ranking number is lower (=stronger) than ours.

The first tiebreak after Match points is still Sonnenborn-Berger. That's why at first glance I like a corrected 2008 system. Anyway, I'm quite quite confident ;) that the new system was the result of thousands of prototyping iterations.

Thought it was interesting that Yemen and Israel got paired in round one. Not a big surprise that Yemen didn't show up and forfeited all four games. Maybe the organizers will avoid any future Arab-Israel pairings.

                Early Round2 observations:

                Iulia got a draw.

Thomas RR got himself out of what looked like a bad position, and is now up the Exchange.

The other "Men's" games look OK for us. I haven't been able to connect to the Women's games for the last half hour.

Canadian men's team headed for 2 draws.

Wesley SO squared off with Alexie Shirov on board 1 and used Be7 instead of Mark Bluvstein's Bd6 to get a comfortable draw.

2.5-1.5 for Uzbekistan - Thomas was our only winner.

2.5-1.5 for Kazakhstan - Dina was our only winner.

                          Some team upsets:
                          Azerbaijan - Vietnam (VIE) 1½:2½
Bosnia & Herzegovina (BIH) - England (ENG) 2½:1½
                          semi-upset
Croatia (CRO) - Bulgaria (BUL) 2½:1½

Maybe the organizers should not go along that kind of boycott and keep making normal pairings. Gens una Sumus or what ?

Exactly, Jean. You don't get to pick your opponents.
