General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
Hungarian over the board GM-IM-ELO chess tournaments 2010-2011
Re: Hungarian over the board GM-IM-ELO chess tournaments 2010-2011
Hi Nagy,
Good to hear from you on chess talk! I have participated 3 times in your First Saturday tournaments in Budapest over the last few years. I can assure other canadian players, it is a great city to play chess. Budapest is very nice and very affordable. The tournaments are well organised; the games always start on time! The arbiter and organiser are friendly. Half your opponents come from Hungary, the other half from around the world. Also, you can play into a few opens there for exemple the Spring Festival in march that I recommend. For those interested, there is a nice adress for an appartement-hotel in Budapest. Just ask Nagy Laszlo or send me a message for the coordinates.

Hi guys, speaking of Hungary, we're expecting Gellert Papp (FIDE 2393) from Hungary to play in the Ottawa Autumn Open this coming weekend. Nicolas, I also saw an envelope from you in the mailbox today, and I'm recording all the new registrations tonight. It might take a few hours, but I'll be posting the full registered list later this evening.
For a complete tournament listing see the Hungarian Federation site. Advertisements are in Hungarian so email the organiser for an English translation.
For <2200 FIDE players, during the year there are bargains
Torokves has 2 RRs(Sept and April)
SINUS RR(August)
Entry fees a modest 5000HUF(25CAN$)
SINUS also offers an IM norm RR which featured GM Sergei Kasparov
There are also many nice opens in Hungary like
-the Hungarian Open in Zalakaros EF CAN$40 which I played in(the <2100 section)
-the Perenyi Memorial(January) in Budapest(at the Hungarian Federation building) has seating limit 100-110 players so you need to register in advance to reserve your spot. EF based on rating-mine was CAN$28 when I was around 2000FIDE
Send me an email if you need the scoop :)
Longer term residents in Hungary also get a chance to play in the Hungarian Team championships which just started. I was recruited to play for Rakosliget in Division II competition this year. Its a bit awkward if you don't speak Hungarian but not insurmountable.
This is my second year living in Budapest. I do a regular report of my tournaments in the BCCF bulletin too if you need more info.

All the best, Aris.
Hi again, just FYI, even though Gellert Papp had already registered and paid in full for the Ottawa Autumn Open this weekend, he decided earlier today that he could no longer make it, and is deferring his registration to one of our future events. Thanks especially to Billy (who speaks some Hungarian) who offered a lot of hospitality to welcome Gellert.
I'll let you guys know as soon as I know just when Gellert might be making the trip over.

FS arranged private accomodations for my for my first 9 months for 12 euros/night in a small room-no Internet, or proper study table. Normal price is 15 euros.
Nick Arsenault rented a place for his stay so he can fill you in on renting an apt for a month.
I have my own place now but for a 1-year lease at the 'foreigner' price from a large agency. There are some other sites to check out for short term rentals but I don't know them.
FS runs FM-A,B and C groups but I should warn you that the prices are astronomical compared to the local prices from other organisers...8 or 9 times the local rates so this year I have not played any FS tournaments. There is some risk you won't get 9 rated games either although a few times I have 10-11 games. You will likely play in an FM-C group as a 1700. There's always room for foreigners with cash :)
There's better ways to spend money in Hungary if you ask me.
