I have always found counting this record to the exact age by days to be somewhat silly. If you want to get down to the nitty gritty, then people born in the spring have a disadvantage to those born in the summer because of the number of days in each month and the number of tournaments that will be available to play in by the time they reach 16 years old. Honestly, if you want to count years and months, fine... but why on earth would it make a difference if you count the days?

Just to make a minor point, 16 years, 6 months and 31 days is actually 16 years, 7 months... unless there is a 32-day month that I'm not aware of. Gotta love the unverified Wikipedia lol

Aside from all that, the calculation of age of when a player reaches 2700 should be IMHO based on the date of the last round of the tournament, not the date of the rating list. Why should a player be at a disadvantage if he reaches 2700 a week after the rating list is released and have to wait until the next rating list for it to be published? And what happens if he reaches 2700 one week and then tanks the next tournament before the ratings are published? He still reached 2700...

All that said, the sad part is that neither Carlsen nor Giri will ever lead normal lives... :(

thanks stephen. dang, he might be within 10 or so after the olympiad so it's def possible! i hope he does it...

according to wikipedia, giri goes to school. pretty sure carlsen did as well (although he took a year off to play in tournies)

Funny. Seems to me that most people dream of having that kind of life... There are certainly worst things in life than having to travel and play for a living...

And, I might add, both Carlsen and Giri appear to be well adjusted, decent human beings and seem to be enjoying their "work" ... I am not sure what better measure of normalcy there could be!

Giri will not be a world champion. Maximum he will be in top 10. He will not play stronger than Max Euwe or Jan Timman. He is not talented enough to be world champion. Next world champion is Magnus Karlsen, Jan Nepomnyastchii (if he will work hard under GM Potkin's supervision) or Levon Aronian. Aronian has a very good genetics. His mother is Armenian and his father is Jewish (exactly like Gary Kasparov). Nobody else. One of these three.
