  • ChessBase 11 coming out soon!

ChessBase is coming out with the next version of their flagship product. While it certainly won't make me a better chess player (I doubt anything would), I'll want to get my hands on it just because of my interests in interface design.

The first big difference that I see from screen shots for ChessBase 11 is the layout and appearance of the user interfaces. ChessBase 11 now sports a Microsoft Office Ribbon-like interface. I've been using Office 2007 for a couple of years now and I still can't decide whether I think the ribbon interface is an improvement. I think I'm leaning to "yes, the ribbon is good." There are also some new features with regards to queries (for instance, ChessBase will now report on "fashionable" lines). There are a number of other new features that someone much more knowledgeable about chess would have to comment on.

Generally I think that ChessBase is a pretty solid program. But I've always had the feeling that the user interface was a little rickety -- previous versions have always looked 2 or 3 years behind the times. I'm quite curious to see how this version will feel.

According to the ChessBase website, ChessBase 11 will be released on October 15. I guess it will make it to Strategy Games sometime after that.

Here's a link to more screenshots, and a Youtube video of ChessBase 11.

Yes, but the pricing is rather outrageous (IMHO)

I really should upgrade. I'm still using chessbase 6.01! I import TWIC pgns every week to keep it up to date with the latest games.
