CFC Governors Currently Meeting - Fall On-line Meeting

At 11:00 AM EDT yesterday, Friday, Oct. 1, the CFC Governors ( there are 60 of them ) began their quarterly Fall on-line meeting on the confidential Governors' Discssion Board. Already, after only 24 hours, 45% of the governors had attended ( 27/60 ). The Meeting goes on for a full week, Oct. 1 -7, with the first 3 1/2 days devoted to debating agenda items, and the last 3 mainly focussed on the voting on motions.

Here is their agenda, and you will see the governors are wrestling with a number of controversial and important CFC issues:

It is sometimes hard to understand, from an ordinary members' perspective, what the governors do to justify their " volunteer " positions. This agenda shows that running a national organization in Canada is somewhat of an operation, even with the modest budget the CFC works on, and that there are many issues that arise which have to be decided. The CFC Executive ( President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Youth Coordinator, FIDE Representative and Past President ) make the day to day administrative decisions and run the operation generally. But all policy decisions, and major administrative decisions, are made by the Governors.

So they meet quarterly to debate and decide - the July Summer AGM is a meeting where they meet face-to-face; the other three ( Spring, Fall & Winter ) are on-line meetings. So the role of the governor in CFC is an important one, and most governors take the responsibility seriously. Last meeting in April, we had over 60% of the governors attend that first " trial " on-line meeting ( it is the first time the governors had met in this way ). We fully expect that we will beat that attendance record this meeting.

This Chart is now correct and complete ( 10/10/01 ).

Though the meeting is confidential, there is discussion already at this meeting to change the format so it could be " viewed by the public ", though only governors would have the power to post.

At the end of the meeting, " summaries " are prepared of each agenda item discussed, and these are then posted on the CFC Website, where the governors' letters are posted. So everyone will have access to them ( the summaries of the April 2010 meeting are posted there ).

Since this has been posted, I guess comments are welcome.

I don't consider the CFC to be a national organization. Quebec, for the most part, appears to have its own organization and chess structure. The CFC membership from that province is not very high. In past decades an objective has been to try to make some accomodation with the Quebec organization but I don't see that on this agenda.

A new web site sounds like a reasonable topic of discussion. Hopefully there is some discussion of attaching a server and some competition with the online servers. These days people pay to play on servers.

Regarding the Charitible status, I don't see the CFC as being a needy organization nor understand how they qualify.

While the board of governors has "elite players", it's my view the chess players need a players union to deal with the CFC. As an example, it's time for the players to negotiate things like the makeup of the national teams and the conditions and financing. There are other matters which should also be negotiated rather than merely accepted by the players.

My opinion, of course.

I agree 100% w/ SIM Ruben. If Larry Bevand, the only chesslover w/ business chutzpah across this vast land gets Charitable Status for his org. and decides to rate games for those above 18 years old, then the CFC would become obsolete.

Good Attendance by Governors

Good Attendance by Governors

As of 11:59 PM EDT on Sunday, Oct. 3, CFC reached the governor attendance mark at the Fall Quarterly Governors' On-line Meeting of 62% ( 37/60 governors ) !! This surpasses the attendance record of 60% set at the Spring Quarterly ( April ) Governors On-line Meeting.

This is a significant participation rate, and shows that the governors are serious about their role of governance.

Rising Governor Attendance

After 5 full days of meeting, the governor attendance has risen to 67% ( 40/ 60 governors ), a very substantial figure, compared to governor participation generally a few years ago.

The meeting runs to Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 11:59 PM EDT ( it got extended from its normal closing time of Thursday, Oct. 7 at 10:00 PM EDT, due to the handling of some motions that had to be voted on ).
