  • Kramnik Reigns Supreme

Unless my arithmetic is wrong, Kramnik today clinched the highest rated tournament in (modern) history. He was followed by Anand, Carlsen and Shirov. The latter played some great fighting chess but was left winless in the event.
The event was notable also for the point format (3 for win, 1 for draw) and the Sofia rule requiring approval of the arbiter before a draw could be agreed. This encouraged the players to fight the games out to the end, although Carlsen may have overachieved in persisting for 175 moves in his attempt to win a drawn ending against Shirov.
    In all, an outstanding event.

Somebody wrote that the event was the first ever 22nd category tournament.
