  • Live Ratings shuffle at the top

The up=to=date FIDE ratings site has Aronian now in the #2 spot. It seems reasonable that as many as six players could move into the 2800+ level soon.
Will we soon see a six-player tournament with 2800+ stratospheric ratings?

    01 Carlsen 2805,0
    02 Aronian 2803,8
    03 Anand 2802,9
    04 Kramnik 2790,6
    05 Topalov 2784,3
    06 Grischuk 2768,5
    07 Karjakin 2767,1
    08 Ivanchuk 2766,2
    09 Mamedyarov2763,1
    10 Wang Yue 2756,4

Yes. I do not know where or when, but I say this with confidence, for such is the way with chess tournaments.

      This is pretty incredible actually.

I can't wait until candidates matches, assuming they'll take place.
Last I heard it should be:
      - Topalov (loser of match with Anand)
      - Kramnik (loser of match with Anand)
      - Kamsky (loser of match with Topalov)
      - Carlsen (high rated)
      - Gelfand (knock-outs winner)
      - Aronian (Grand Prix 1st spot)
      - Radjabov (Grand Prix 2nd spot)
      - Don't know who's 8th, presumably someone from Azerbaijan as the matches should take place there (I don't know if either Mamedyarov or Gashimov got appointed, and / or if Aronian will be allowed to play there)

It may take an extra year or two for someone like Carlsen to pull away from the pool the way Kasparov did at some point :)

        Hi Alex:

I think I remember doing an article for the SCC newsletter that said that Ilyumzhinov moved the matches to Russia, because Aronian would not play in Azerbaijan. Can anyone confirm my memory on this?

If that's the case, then I expect Russia will name the 8th player.

          Re: Carlsen-Aronian!?

Carlsen-Aronian is the big match to look forward to.

          No Petroffs, no Slav's(I hope)
          Grunfelds, Semi-Slavs. Ragozins, Marshall gambits...
          and tons of action

Azerbaijan were allowed to keep their nominated player, Mamedyarov.

Given the inflation of ELO ratings in recent years (decades), it's probably not surprising that we are seeing more 2750+ and 2800+ rated players. It just goes to show how dominant Kasparov was when he reached 2851 back in 1999/2000. That would probably be equivalent to 2875 or 2900 now.

Carlsen's got his groove back. Must've been all those devestating losses he suffered the earlier tournament

tbh i was going to predict on here carlsen beating wang yue but then i didn't, i shoulda, i woulda looked psychic 0____0

instead i'll predict that carlsen beats gashimov with the black pieces d:
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)

Carlsen seems to like Nanjing. Last year he overtook Topalov atop the rating list after this event. This year is going very well also.
He just finished Topalov off with a White Spanish, so he sits at 4/5. The other impressive result thus far has been Bacrot. Great to see him flaring again.
