  • Turkey and retirement...

I was in Turkey recently (a must see country) and saw an incredible number of guys (no women) playing Backgammon and Rummy (very little chess) all day long in local establishments.

Today on CBC radio...I heard a report which helped me to understand why all these folks were not working the usual 35-40 hour week:

"One could qualify for full state retirement benefits in Turkey at the age of 45 for men and 41 for women, according to a report in October by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a research and policy group with 33 member countries. Rules for retirement are complex in Turkey, but simply put, Turks essentially can receive full state pensions after working about 25 years. Conceivably, if one started working at 20, retirement benefits could be had at 45."
