Re: Noritsyn tops roster in Guelph Nov. 6-7

It's too bad there is a conflict - the annual Montmagny Open (near Quebec City) is offering $3300 in guaranteed prizes the same weekend. I think they set their dates a year ago.

I doubt that the two tournaments draw on the same player pool as they are 875 km apart.

You get a player (or group of players) somewhere in the middle (e.g. Ottawa) who wants to play chess that weekend.....

              Hi,

It's difficult to say what should be the distance between two tournaments for "conflicts" to be allowed. 875kms (or whatever it is) is a huge distance, even if only 400+ kms in middle.
It's also a challenge for organizers to know when and where are tournaments being hosted. As an occasional organizer, I've gone through 5 to 8 websites to know where or if a tournament is being held when. Everyone wants to place an event on one or two websites and the others get ignored. All because we don't have ONE official website, clearly. Several tournaments go under the radar at the CFC site, including apparently this one in Quebec.

I think that 875 Km is far enough apart for no conceivable conflict.

As an aside, Hal has hosted the Fall Pro-Am on the first weekend of November for many years now. Just as he has hosted the Winter Pro-Am on the first weekend of February for many years too.

Re: Noritsyn tops roster in Guelph Nov. 6-7

                  Thanks Alex and Patrick.

As much as I would like to lure more players from Quebec, I would expect most of them to play more locally, particularly in weekenders. Hopefully both tournaments will enjoy strong participation. Aris has a nice event planned for next weekend in Ottawa, so it's not clear how many of them will be looking to travel.

Guelph advance registration currently stands at 43 players. You can avoid the late fee by an email registration to halbond@sympatico.ca

                    Hal,
I think I'll be playing in this tournament too. In the Open Section. My dad should be sending you an email shortly.

                    Thanks.
                    Sincerely,

Actually they are 923 km apart along the 401 after I put in University of Guelph and the actual address of the Quebec event as the start and end points of the Google Maps request for directions. The 875 km was for a generic Guelph to Quebec City request for directions.

Oh boy! I just updated the long neglected SWOCL site for upcoming events.
I checked the EOCA, GTCL, and CFC websites, but never thought to look for conflicts outside Ontario. :(

                        http://chess.servegame.com/swocl/news.php

Of course, the Montmagny Open organizers were free to list it on the CFC website. ;)
I would encourage all organizers to list their tournaments on the CFC website. It's free with a simple email to info@chess.ca

Added benefit, it gets on the newsletter also. :D

Now that the SWOCL website is up to date is the long neglected $100 for last year SWOCL rating section champions coming to the recipients now(I'm talking about actual money not SWOCL bucks.)?
University and Chess, a difficult mix.
