  • 2010 Florencio Campomanes Memorial Blitz Tournament in Toronto

Last Oct 30, 2010, the Manila Chess Club conducted a blitz tournament to honor Mr. Florencio Campomanes, not only for being a former FIDE president but also for being a macho man. The tournament has 2 stages: 1. the reguklar blitz tournament and 2. blitz match play. Time control is 5 minutes per player per game. The organizers originally intended a match between Tin Horton Mississauga vs Tim Horton Scarborough but some key player of IM streng were not able to make it.

Meals ( 12 dishes to select from) were provided free to all participants, including coffee and refreshments. Parking was also free. If you lose in the chess warm up games, you can go to our karaoke and sing your favorite songs to your hearts contents - for free - to remove the pain of losing. There is also Heineken and colas.

Erwin Casareno hosted the event, which was played from 2:00 pm Oct 30, 2010 to 9:30 am Oct 31, 2010 - a real marathon blitz tournament.

The regular blitz tournament was an inivtational tournament so all invited players have free entries. The players came from Scarborough and Mississauga.

The first stage - the regular blitz tournametn was won jointly by Jingle Kho and Andrew Picana - both veterans of the 2010 Canadian Open. Erwin Casareno was the TD.

The second stage was a marathon mathc between Andrew Picana and Erwin Casareno - lasting for over 12 hours, played continously from 9:00 pm to 9:30 am.. This is test of chess abilities and physical endutance. The only break allowed is a 1 minute break when you go to the washroom.

Erwin was leading 24-20 but lost the last 4. The match ended in a draw 24-24. Whew!! I was glad it was over.

Now i am trying to recuperate from lack of sleep ! Crazy chess !! It's good this tournament happens only once a year.
