  • CFC President competes in William F. Darch Memorial VII

The PEEL CHESS CLUB hosted another William F. Darch Memorial
and as a twist we also invited 4 players each from SWOCL and GTCL to compete in a Team Match.

Jaime Solis was the return champion to win this year's event 5 out of 6
Sam Sharpe and John Erickson Tied for second - third with 4.5 of 6
CFC President Robert Gillanders played many games under time pressure
and was able to win his last game to tie 4th- 5th with Ali Syed.
    Alan Hutchinson Claimed 6th place.
Ted Termeer had very exciting games but was just not able to convert advantages into wins. He claimed 7th Place.
Richard Marks a player new to the PEEL INVITATIONALS unfortunately
had to leave early due to illness. He got 8th Prize.

John R. Brown filled in with byes as Sam Sharpe was playing in both the Team Match and the William F. Darch Memorial VII.

The SWOCL vs GTCL Team Match ended in a tie 4-4.

The SWOCL Team led the match in the fIrst half but as Mike Dougherty said GTCL starts slow. They were able to close the gap and the last game to finish between Alex Ferreira and Keith Wight was a tension builder as Keith had beaten Alex In the First Half. SWOCL only needed a draw. But under the complications Keith blundered sealing the tie result.

Michael Dougherty played Hans Jung to a 1.5 -.5 result
Mikhail Egorov played sharp exciting Chess against Erwin Casareno Finishing 1.5-.5

Ian Finlay and Sam Sharpe played two drawn games. 1-1
Alex Ferreira and Keith wight ended 1-1

Saturday night the bulk of the players finished off two crock pots of chili
and 5 stayed overnight to compete in a dart tournament and cribbage match.

Next year's event may move to a new location so we can get more players.
All had a Great time .
    John R. Brown
    PEEL CHESS CLUB

    Hi John,

First of all, congratulations for the successful 7th memorial tournament for Mr. William F. Darcy.

The second is the collected games. Is it possible to request for a copy of the games in the team match, as i want to see how A. Ferreira and M. Dougherty scored the needed wins to tie the score.

Lastly, thank you for choosing me to participate in this year's team competition.

We need chess organizers like you !!! More power to you!!

FIDE president abducted by aliens a while back and now writing a book about his experiences. Also says that chess was an alien gift to humanity, as supported by having the same rules all around the world ages ago before the age of transportation.

Our CFC president Gillanders has yet to come clean about his alien experiences?!

It's nice to see CFC President Bob Gillanders competing in a chess tournament. Bob was close to National Master strength at his peak a few years ago. It's not always easy for CFC Executive members to find the time to play chess, after working their career jobs and then devoting many volunteer hours per week to Canadian chess, so I appreciate Bob's interest! :)

He was once paid by the CFC - I imagine that was alien enough.
