  • Chess Tournaments in the Netherlands: Jan - March 2011

The Netherlands is a real chess paradise for chess players. It has been my home for 10 years before i crossed the pond and settled in Canada. For a E 10 entry fee (about $ 13) that already incudes free lunch (big chesse/ham sandwich, an apple or banana, a packed fruit drink and a free coffee). And there is no need to bring your own chess sets and clocks.

So if you are passing by The Netherlands in Europe, and have some free weekends, you might want to play in a 1 or 2 days tournament. Below are the list of tournaments from Jan- March 2011.

What are (generally) the conditions for entry? Do you have to be a member of anything (like the CFC here...) or do you have to have a FIDE rating, or will they take into account a CFC or USCF rating? Just curious. My daughter-in-law is from Holland and occasionally we have been over there visiting and might do so again soon...

Goede morgen Meneer Liles. Hoe haat het? Wow! i still remember some of my dutch words.. I am happy to know that you have a Dutch daughter in law. The DUtch are very efficient people, very friendly, and they keep their land clean and well managed. Their water management is outstanding.

In Canada, we have CFC. In the Netherlands, they call it KNSB = Kingdom of the Netherlands Schaak Bond.

Generally, membership with the KNSB is not mandatory as a pre requisite to play in a weekend tournament. This is why i never saw a tournament flyer which says KNSB membership required. It is not demanded for long, rapid or blitz tournaments. So if you are planning to play in weekend tournaments with the schedule - Friday, Saturday, Sunday, there is no need to purchase a weekend membership (as we do in Canada -say $ 20). If you join a club, KNSB membership is already included in your club membership fee of E 120 (CAD 160) annually.

KNSB membership is required when you join a chess club, that play in the Bond level, and the National Level competitions (see below)

      KNSB competitie 2010-2011

      Meesterklasse
      Klasse 1A Klasse 1B
      Klasse 2A Klasse 2B Klasse 2C Klasse 2D
      Klasse 3A Klasse 3B Klasse 3C Klasse 3D
      Klasse 3E Klasse 3F Klasse 3G Klasse 3H

My club (Voorschoten in the Leiden Schaak Bond) used to play in the class 3F.

Bond level is a city wide association. Example is the Haagse Schaak Bond -in The Hague region - about 23 local clubs playing against each other.

FIDE ratings or CFC ratings are accepted when you do not have KNSB ratings. It is just a measure of your strenth and for pairing purposes.

When you join a weekend tournament at club level, most of the time, they offer plenty of prizes to make participants happy. Att he end of the tournnament, they immediately announce the winners, and applaused by the participants. It is still a joy to receive a bottle of wine, CANA - which costs about E 2, or a 6 pakcs of beer or a chocolate or a book. I am sure you will enjoy it. And in the tournament site, there is a "bartender" that serves everyone. Just tell me if you want to borrow some of my euro coins and notes.

Mr. Liles, if you tell me which city you will go to, i could help you find chess tournaments close to your city, especially in the area of The Hague and Leiden (where GM Smeets and GM van der Wiel play with the LSG club). General conditions of entry: you can pay the registration fee minutes before teh start of the tournament. Canadain dollar not accepted -only euros.

Many thanks Erwin... I have no firm plans at the moment, but I most certainly will inquire when I do! Most likely I would be in Amsterdam or perhaps Den Hague (where my son and his wife used to live for a while).
