Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:

* Hatred

* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party

Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.

14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Hi there, just finishing dinner now, so here are the initial wall charts, which I still need to double-check. Due to the sheer number of characters, I will post each of the sections as a separate reply to this post. Later tonight, I hope to get to the event report. Until then, here are a couple of points to consider with regards to our upcoming EOCA tournaments :
1) We have recently been FIDE rating both the top (Masters) section and the U2200 section. However, given the continuing solid success of the U2000 section, starting with my next weekender, the Ottawa Spring Open, we will also be FIDE rating the U2000 section.
2) After the Ottawa Spring Open in March, my next event after that will be the Eastern Ontario Open, straddling Canada Day, which is probably the best day of the year to be in the National Capital area! Anyway, we are working on making this a 6-round event (for the same prices as our 5-rounders), and on lining up lower-priced accommodations. I should be posting the details soon, but I thought I would give a heads-up, giving people more time to think about booking the lower-priced accommodations, as Ottawa is popular that weekend!

It is very impressive that the initial report can be issued just hours after the finishing of the event. The Tournament Organizers in Toronto area should learn from this efficiency and work enthusiasm. It is important to be consistent in terms of information publishing before, during, and after the event.

Aris always runs impressive events with great professionalism, enthusiasm, and coverage. I try to play in all the Ottawa events I can due to this.
As for coverage of tournaments in Toronto, I can only speak for the ones at Hart House. I've had the lead organizer role in these tournaments, and am therefore responsible for this. However to be honest, I am not sure to what extent things will change. There's no doubt that a few computer clicks and wallcharts can go on chesstalk. The drawback of not doing everything (arbiter and organizer) at Hart House is, I don't always have all the information on me to publish an adequate report minutes after the last round is played. Bryan Lamb and I have our own personal lives as well, and committing a full consecutive 3 days with no more than 4-5 hours a sleep per night can be draining.
As for the standings, they've been published within 72 hours of the end of the event at the CFC website. I've missed a couple of written reports as I find repeating myself when not discussing who won.
As for coverage during, we limit ourselves to posting Sunday morning pairings, as players in the tournament request it. Satisfying the curiosity of chesstalkers by covering the events while they're in progress is low on my priority list. I prefer focusing my efforts in making it a more pleasant experience to those on-site.
Having said that, you are correct, and thank you for bringing it up. Toronto event coverage seems to be lagging behind many others. I will bring this up with my colleagues at Hart House and Bryan. There's always room for improvement.

Surely you can find volunteers willing to enter at least the games from the top sections? In Montreal, 2 or 3 people can have 20 or 30 games per round entered/posted within a day or two (if not a few hours) after they have been played.
Get a non-player with a laptop and Chessbase, and give them the scoresheets as the games end.
Otherwise - send the scoresheets to me, and I will see that they get entered.

Hi there, I just spent about 4 hours trying to figure out a corruption in the FIDE rating file, but have finally succeeded, and submitted all of the rating files to Gerry, yes! :)
However, this means the event report will be delayed another day, sorry about that. I will be posting it under another new thread, as this one is taking a different direction :
As for Hugh's "complaint", I must admit being quite disappointed with it. As far as chess guys go, I love Hugh, but I find your "surely you can find volunteers" comment just plain inappropriate. Do you think I am incompetent, lazy, stupid, or perhaps IT IS JUST NOT THAT EASY TO GET VOLUNTEERS?! People are busy. I have asked many times for many different volunteer tasks, but people are busy. So just like Alex noted above, any tasks are prioritized as to criticality to our onsite participants. And we cut costs every which way. Carbon sheets cost more, and there is no way I am going to pass that cost on to our players. John Upper provides some carbon sheets, and writes articles on them, and that works out well for our onsite participants. If there is anyone out there, including Hugh, please feel free to offer to bring carbon sheets, and then enter them. By the way, at the WYCC, the Organizers PAID less well-off arbiters to enter the games overnight! ;)
I guess this is a bit of a rant, but sometimes it just boggles my mind how much the efforts of Organizers & TDs are under-estimated. I don't post pairings after midnight because I LIKE sleeping that little, LOL! I'll close with an incident at the end of the tournament this weekend. Dozens of players shook my hand on the way out, and earnestly thanked me for a great weekend of chess. These were genuine moments, which are really special for an Organizer/TD. Finally, there was only one player left packing up his stuff, and I figured I had around 30 minutes left of my own packing up, including the playing area, my TD "fort", and the skittles room. I had also been in the playing room for 5 hours straight, so I asked this one last player if he could just watch my laptop for a minute, so I could go take a leak before finishing off my onsite tasks. So he literally snapped at me "only if it takes at most a minute"! I was shocked, but had to pee! When I quickly returned, he silently ignored me, just left. That hurt me bigtime! :(
I would love more volunteer help, whether it be for capturing games for posterity, or my personal favorite, organizing billeting for travelling players. Please feel free to step up, and I will greet you with open arms. Else, most offsite "complaints" are just not fair! :(

I have a stack of scoresheets and bulletins from the FQE - some 20-25 years old - that I am still entering. Otherwise - these games are gone forever - most players just throw their scoresheets away. Think of someone wanting to write a book on Sambuev's chess career, and finding no games against Ontario's best players. There are many collectors of GM games (and others) around the world, who refer to my CanBase website regularly.

No one should need to apologize for trying to make things better.
I played in one of Aris' tournaments, in early 2009 and I took the opportunity to have an amicable conversation with him on that topic, telling him pretty much the same things you are writing today. Aris did not argue much and even seemed in agreement. Too easy. I should have known better... We apparently haven't moved one bit since then. Words like "history" have no meaning for young people. :) Only money coming from entries count.
You have now seen how little players respect their Organizers. Hey if you needed volunteers why did the local guys not stay and help clean up?
I can understand the out of towners leaving ASAP. But really where are the local guys going ?
You could solve clean up by letting every one know that they have to use their own sets for the final round that way when they finish they clear up their men , one less hassel.
You know it is really a disgrace when players cry for tournaments but do not want to put any effort into helping out where they can, to keep us lowly organizers giving them tournaments.
There may come a time when the players will ask "what ever happened to Aris he gave us such great tournaments" Then some guy will say" He got tired of all the thanklessness of the running of tournaments without volunteer help"
One thing that sets Organizers apart from players is that we try to offer a tournament most players offer complaints without volunteering their help.
