              DETAILS OF EVENTS: 5th Annual Grand Pacific Open Victoria, BC Canada April 22-25 2011

              The Grand Pacific Open is BC's largest chess event and this will be it's 5th annual! The main event is a 6 round FIDE and CFC rated Swiss with $4250 in prizes. There are also a number of side events which are free if you play in the main event and include a Scholastic tournament, an active tournament, Midnight Blitz with $100 in prizes, and a Bughouse tournament to finish off the weekend.

              The tournament hall itself is the very nice ballroom at the 5 Star Hotel Grand Pacific. The hotel is located on the Inner Harbour in downtown Victoria, close to tourist destinations and across the street from the Seatle Clipper and Coho ferry connections.

              We now have a number of Sponsors for the 5th Annual Grand Pacific Open. See our Sponsors page for a list. Thanks for supporting our sponsors. The Bard and Banker Scottish Brew Pub is sponsoring the Grand Pacific Open. There will be an informal gathering at the Bard and Banker on Sunday April 24 starting at 3:15pm - 5:30pm.               For all side events, FREE if registered in the main event, the Grand Pacific Open. Otherwise, $10 gets you a pass to all side events. CFC membership not required for any of the side events.

              1st tiebreak for non cash prizes is individual cumulative score. 2nd tiebreak is cumulative score of opponents. Biggest upset prize and the Top Women prizes may be won in addition to any other prize won. Prizes for which there are no eligible players will not be awarded. Half point byes for rounds 1-5 if requested before the start of round 1. We may use floater players in the event of an odd number of players for any given round - games against floater players might not be CFC or FIDE rated. Prize ceremony at 2:15 on Monday, April 25. BCCF membership is included in entry fee. All chess equipment provided.

                Generations Battle for Chess Supremacy

                Players aged six to eighty will go head to head in the 5th annual Grand Pacific Open Chess Tournament, to be held at the Hotel Grand Pacific on Easter Weekend April 22nd to 25th. Modern chess is unique in that there are no age or gender barriers to participation. This year’s event will feature close to 100 competitors from six countries. Play begins at 6:00 pm Friday and continues during the afternoon and evening on Saturday and Sunday, concluding with the final round Monday at 10:00 am. Spectators may attend free of charge.

                Top contenders will be International Grand Master Igor Rausis of the Czech Republic, BC Champion Jack Yoos of Vancouver, Women’s Grandmaster Nino Maisuradze of France, International Master Lawrence Day of Toronto (last year’s winner), and Women’s FIDE Master Valeria Gansvind of Estonia.

                However, the younger generation is out in force, led by World Under 10 Champion Jason Cao of Victoria. Also present will be US Grade One Champion Praveer Sharan of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Canadian Under 16 Champion Tanraj Sohal of Surrey, US National Girls Champion Alexandra Botez of Burnaby, Canadian Under 8 Champion Joshua Doknjas of Surrey and Canadian Under 8 Girls Champion Andrea Botez of Burnaby.

                Selected Biographies:


                Igor Rausis is 50 years old and living in Varnsdorf, Czech
                Republic. Igor became an International Grandmaster atthe age of 30.
                Igor has been a member of the Latvian Olympic team at several Chess
                Olympiads: as a Player, as a Coach of various team and as a Delegate.
                Some of Igor’s tournament wins: 1987 Prague Cedok Open, 1989 Muenchen
                Invitational, 1992 Moscow Invitational, 1995 Paris Open, 1995 Heart of
                Finland Open, 1997 Paris Invitational.

                Praveer Sharan, a first grader in the Oak Creek Elementary School at Lake Oswego, OR, is the Oregon State K-2 chess champion for 2010 and 2011. He won the US National chess championship in the K-1 section in May 2010. In addition, Praveer has won several local chess championships held in the Portland area, including the City of Portland championship in 2010.

                  GM Rausis was undefeated in his simul against 14 opponents. The side events start this morning at 10am. Round 1 of the GPO starts at 6pm.
