  • Cheap so-called Fritz12

every now and then there is a (short-lived) post about a super cheap version of Fritz12 available from some of Sam Walton's corner stores.

This program -- "Fritz XII" -- is not actually the Fritz12 you get from Chessbase (or Strategy Games), but hybrid version of Fritz12 and Fritz10 which Chessbase liscenced to VivaMedia.

Chessbase does not support this program. If you load it and log on the the Chessbase update site it will allow you to waste your time and bandwidth downloading the update to Fritz12 before telling you that it can't install it because your computer doesn't have the Fritz12gui. Your computer won't have the Fritz12 gui because VivaMedia installed a hybrid of Fritz12 and Fritz10.

Don't bother to go to the VivaMedia site because they don't have updates or patches for their "FritzXII", so you won't be able fix any of the bugs that too often infect Chessbase's initial releases.
