The first fundraiser is over and a total of 12 players entered. An exciting last round came down to the wire. Perron vs. Neven saw Sean better, up two pawns and both players on increment. Perron's e-pawn was on the 7th, allowing him to sac a rook for a mating attack. Nice game Sean. But 1st place went to Alex Yam and Diwen Shi with 4/5. Diwen defeated Sean in an earlier round and put in a performance rating of 2115. He just keeps getting stronger. So Alex and Diwen split most of the money and Krishneel Singh took the Top U1700 prize with 2.5/5.
This was the first of 5 active fundraisers leading up to the Calgary International in May. They are all $20 to enter with 50% of the money going towards the prize fund and the other 50% going towards the Calgary International. The dates for the other fundraisers are as follows:
Sunday, March 27
Sunday, April 10
Sunday, May 8
Sunday, May 15
CFC membership is not requires as these events will not be rated. Time controls are game in 25 + 10 seconds increment. The next event will feature the same type of prize fund, with an added bonus that the first place finisher gets a paid entry into the Calgary International Reserve section (worth $40) and we will also be doing a draw for 2 chess books (to be chosen by our club executive). Really good value for an afternoon of active chess.
Currently, we are experiencing problems with our website (not available until further notice). I do have a mirror site up for the club (http://www3.telus.net/calgarychess/) but for some reason, I can't get our pgn viewer to work. I do have a website available for the Calgary International but until our regular site is fixed, I will not post it. I will keep everyone updated.
Thanks to everyone who showed up to play. Hope to see you in a couple of weeks for Fundraiser #2. Here are the final standings:
