  • The great WESLEY SO, will be in town until 29 March

I received an email this morning from CMA

    And now....great breaking news -
Just who might be gracing us with his presence???
One of the world's very top young players, a super-GM
rated over 2667, is already with us here in Scarborough!
Yes, the great WESLEY SO, will be in town until 29 March:

Can we get more details about his visit (simultaneous, lecture ...)

    Thank you

    Hi Rene,

    I've had a number of phone-calls this morning - and a visit -
from folks interested in a Wesley So lecture/cum simul:-)

Whilst CMA has the resources to get involved, time is not a
mitigating factor on our side here. David Cohen I understand
was looking to assist - the Annexe Chess Club Monday night
was suggested - but Ted Winick thought it would be difficult.

I would hope that perhaps Erwin Casareno and the talented
Filipino chess community in Toronto might like to take the
lead here and organise something substantial for Wesley. NM
Dante Zuniga on the phone just now sounded very enthusiastic!

The Scarborough Chess Club has the space and wherewithal
I'm sure, and Wesley is not too far away. A Thursday night?

If anyone would like to get in touch with Wesley, please email me.

      So & Scarborough CC

      Hi Francis:

The Scarborough CC Executive will have to deal with this, but as a member I can say that a potential problem is that we are in the middle of our 9-round club championship ( Rd. 4 tomorrow night ). Those entered relied on the beginning and end date. It might be logistically difficult now to cancel a round for a lecture/simul, and have to extend the tournament one more week, which might catch some players off guard for the last week.

        Hi Bob,

If having him over is important for the club, maybe an extra non-tournament day can be booked with the school board. I know this is last minute...but I guess you gotta wanna :)

Do you think Mr. So would be interested in playing in the Hamilton Winter Open during the last weekend of March or is he taking a break from tournament chess right now? I'm sure that the Hamilton City Chess Club may be intersted in having him play in the Hamilton Winter Open. I think that there are a few IM's and possibly another GM going to be there as well. ;)Check out the pre reg list posted by Garvin Nunes here on chesstalk under 'Hamilton Winter Open'

I have just sent messages to the Filipino chess community in the GTA and see if we can organize something at the Kalayaan Community Center KCC.

I am just wondering if Marc Poulinc can invite Wesley to his tournamnet.

Wesley's mom Eleanor, a permanent resident is co-ordinating
his visit, and I've forwarded her tel/email contact details to all
who've enquired (incl the CFC:-), hope something materialises!

Should be a blast, if it takes off!
                (no pun intended)

I have sent Wesley an invitation this morning. If he declines the invitation due to other plans, or he wants to take a break from chess, or we lack sufficient titled players or finances, that's fine. No harm in asking. :)

Either way, we wish him success and a pleasant vacation in Canada. :)

I also hope that you have invited him to perform a simul and lecture next week at MCC for the kids to see a very young chess phenom to serve as an inspiration to them. I heard that he will free for any chess activities until His departure.

                    Thank you very much!
