  • The Budget and chess

I notice that the new Federal Budget would have the following:

"For so many Canadian children, involvement in the arts is a big part of growing up. Whether it's dance or music lessons or art camp, it's a great way to make friends and develop their creativity. But for some families the fees and other costs involved can be beyond their reach. To help parents in providing these important opportunities for their children, we will establish a new Children's Arts Tax Credit, covering up to $500 per child in qualifying expenses for eligible arts or cultural activities."

Would chess qualify? (will this budget pass? Unlikely.)

I saw this too, and was going to post, but Hugh beat me to it!

I think that the Canadian chess community should make a big effort to fit chess into the 'artistic endeavour' realm, to take advantage of this provision in the 2011 budget, which, of course, still has to pass to become legislation.

So, Canadian chess people, write to your MPs on this one; I will be doing so. My MP, Liberal and House Speaker Peter Milliken, is a chess player himself from youth, which should help! He visited the Kingston Chess Club a decade ago, and played a casual game with young Raja Panjwani, who won easily.
    :) :)

Ontario has a line "the Children’s Activity Tax Credit" with chess included: http://www.fin.gov.on.ca/en/catc/eligible.html (from the older chesstalk thread http://www.chesstalk.info/forum/showthread.php?t=4546

Thus it might succeed on a Federal level too. However Arts and Activities are different things, and chess might be not included.

Chess is specifically included in this proposal. This is the info per our professional income tax site.

This may give a bit of a boost to the idea of the CFC being an athletic association.
