  • 2011 Lethbridge Open - Live Broadcast

Hey, if you have nothing better to do, tune in and watch a few games from the Lethbridge Open.

24 players have registered (pretty good for this 2 horse town) with players like FM Pechenkin, Yearwood, Hughey and Rekhson.

Follow the action with this link.

    Hi Tony:

I think your idea in Alberta of broadcasting top boards in local tournaments is great. I know I take a look over the course of an evening - I like to see some good Canadian players' games - they don't all have to be GM's and IM's to be interesting. Thanks.

    Bob

( P.S. Still sorry I couldn't talk the Scarborough CC exec. into purchasing the two of your DGT boards you were interested in selling, so we could broadcast our SCC top weekly tournament games each Thursday ).

I often watch the broadcast games, like today, so think it's a great idea. It must help promote chess but I suppose it's expensive. Maybe the only ones who watch are the geriatric crowd. :)

Watching games live can be fun, but if it's an either-or proposition as to broadcasting live versus making a .pgn file available within a couple of days, I'd almost always go for the latter.

For most ACA events, its both. Most have pgn files available after the tournament.

Initially it is expensive. I'm not sure what new DGT boards are selling for, haven't checked, but I would imagine it would be in the neighbourhood of $800 per board.

I would think GTCL could find some money to purchase a few (maybe a bunch of clubs could get together and share them). There are always options.

You could also look into MonRoi, not sure how costly the hub and license is myself.

Also, you might be able to get some used DGT's from somewhere. I seem to recall Hal Bond telling me that after the Olympiad in Germany, they were looking to sell some of their DGT's.

The final round has started. We are broadcasting the top two boards:

Board 1: Micah Hughey vs. Roy Yearwood
Board 2: Vlad Pechenkin vs. Vlad Rekhson

Roy is the current leader with 3.5/4 and managed to draw Pechenkin in round 4.

The battle of the Vlad's should also be interesting.

              Watch the games here.
