General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
"honest environmental nuts" You forget that you are part of the environment; as much as you do not like it you are..
If the greens would have focused on real pollution instead of make believe pollution such as carbon dioxide they might even be my second choice on the ballot.
"global warming hysteria" The only hysteria in this is in the denial industry of which you are proudly a member. Behind the denial industry are the oil, coal, and numerous other powerful companies. On the other side, is the science...
Personally what I find amusing about this line of attack is that those same powerful companies that you so hate are lined up for handouts from the provincial liberals for green energy projects. This will come to an end soon.
"sensible people of Canada" unfortunately have been brainwashed with the lies of the right wing. As their rights are dismantled slowly but surely maybe they will wake up...
Nowhere have our rights have been more thoroughly dismantled than in Ontario by your left wing nanny state presided over by the Ontario Liberals. Talk to a police officer about that. Conservatives want more rights for individuals not less. Even the hated G20 police behaviour was presided over by the province including passing of new secret laws by cabinet decree no less. The only thing that is keeping Ontario from becoming a police state is that there is that pesky Charter of Rights.
I did not predict the election. I had hopes but no predictions. Once again you are making things up. The only insanity is ignoring climate change.
Hang on to your hopes. They will sustain you. I distinctly recall your posts about strategic voting and defeating the Conservatives. Quit being such a sore loser. The universe is unfolding as it should. The amusing thing when you taunted me with that, when you thought the minority scenario would play out was that I decided that you were right. It brought me such a peaceful, easy feeling.
Anyone who can't adjust to a minor increase in sea levels over almost a century (which I don't concede will even happen at least not according to the preeminent scientist in this area) may need more help than anyone can give them.
For another view on this new adjustment factor manufactured crisis:
Mr. Beckwith, your arrogance is in presuming that people should have been voting to defeat the Conservatives rather than voting to elect people whose policies they believed in. Most people won't take their cue on who to vote for from people who seem to be foaming at the mouth.
If the greens would have focused on real pollution instead of make believe pollution such as carbon dioxide they might even be my second choice on the ballot..
Once again you show no understanding of climate change. Carbon dioxide is changing our climate; google Greenhouse Gases if you do not understand that. Sorry if I do not respect your views, but you are climate change illiterate...

I never said I hate any companies; stop making things up. We need to transition off fossil fuels and onto green energy sources. Not sure why you are so scared of doing this. Countries that do this will be better for it.

Stop foaming at the mouth...The Ontario Liberals may not win, but quite often provincial elections go opposite to Federal ones...

Of course I wanted the Conservatives to be kept to a minority or worse; there is no surprise in that. Why do you have a problem with that? I never predicted an outcome; you are making that up. Keep some semblance of reality in your posts.
When you said rob from the p&c and give it to the u&i, what exactly were you referring to?
Examples off the top of my head:
Bailing out the auto industry losers. By losers, I do not mean this in a pejorative way. If people don't want to buy GM or whatever then let the free market work.
CMHC. Why insure lenders who make loans to people who are serious risks to pay it back? Why should taxpayers potentially be on the hook for these loans? Why can't people save money for a substantial downpayment instead?
People for whom welfare is a lifestyle choice. I have met more than a few people who are long-term welfare recipients by choice. They are capable of working but can live on little money and are perfectly happy not to work (or work on the side for cash) and collect free money.
Graffiti bylaws here in Ottawa. If a business owner has his establishment tagged by one of these "artists" then the business owner himself has to pay to remove the graffiti. Instead, I would suggest that anyone caught tagging a building be made to pay some gigantic fine (say $10K) and use the proceeds from these fines to reimburse the owners for their troubles.
Subsidized housing. Housing is expensive in many large Canadian cities. Perhaps people ought to move where housing is less expensive rather than have taxpayers foot the bill for their lifestyle choice.
In general, the tax code is a method of using implied force to redistribute wealth. Even if it is democratic, that doesn't make it correct. We could all vote on ChessTalk that say the wealthiest person all give us $1K each or we would get together and beat him up. That's not so much different than saying to people "pay your taxes and we will re-distribute some to persons X and Y and Z or we will toss you into jail", imo.

Alas your real problem is that I am climate change scam aware. The biggest greenhouse gas is water vapour so when you exhale don't worry about the CO2 as long as you are wearing a stillsuit.
Its been a cold spring. Kind of hard to convince the residents of Los Angeles that its getting warmer when they are saw snow this year for the first time in a long time.
Do your scientific sources confirm we are actually in Ice Age Cooling?
Bob
Hi Bob,
While I have seen some people making that argument, I doubt it. My guess is that we are continuing to see retreat of glaciers in places such as Greenland. Any warming or cooling will have more to do with the sun than anything else. Things can change suddenly though.

We live in a complex mixed economy. Capitalism has its ups and downs in industries and regions, at times leaving certain communities and labour sectors unemployed. It is useful to have a population base to draw from if work returns. Most of Canada's industrial sector (except for the Auto pact) has moved to the third world. It is easy to move money there, not for workers to travel there. This has also resulted in a collapse of the industrialized middle class and loss of consumer spending (while the government employee middle-class has grown richer). Many hard-working and skilled workers have become unemployed due to economic forces beyond their control.
In pre-welfare time, many of the unemployed workers would turn to begging and crime to survive. Having welfare keeps the peace, and the bureaucratic system keeps the welfare recipients' morale low, making them feel useless and thankful for the crumbs. Much of that redistribution money goes to the well-paid social workers and their offices to maintain the welfare system and deal with all the mental and physical illnesses of the downtrodden.
People complain about high taxes, but in Toronto it's the high cost of housing that makes people struggle. Most available employment is minimum wage, not enough to own a home or even rent an apartment. Living in cars/tenting isn't an option in the winter. Subsidized housing of some sort is required, although the present system is exploited by land developers and contractors and has a bureaucracy. Coops are cheaper as volunteer members do many of the bureaucracy and maintenance tasks, and have better self-esteem to hold paying jobs.
It's not robbing money from the richest and corporate taxpayers who aren't necessarily the most productive and competent; they've inherited money, got tax breaks through loophoops, made money from government contracts and tariff protection. The rich didn't get rich in a vacuum, but within a society with government rules. It is the working middle class who are paying for the government programs and bank interest. A true conservative would pay off the debt before cutting corporate taxes.
And, yes, in Toronto I know of several unemployable strong chess players who are happy to receive a free home and welfare to play chess every day.
