Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Well, it is your place Larry... thanks for considering it. I think the confusion of two boards is more a problem than people adapting to the changes, but c'est la vie...
PS: at least change the website to remove the blurb about Pascal's tour.... ;)
In recent months I had grown increasingly frustrated with the old board, because it was such a chore to find threads with new contributions. I am delighted that it is now very easy to search on "New Posts" - completely solves the problem for me.
Sorry if I have missed some feature on the old board which would have made this task simpler, but I was unable to do anything much better than search on "Today", which wasn't much of a solution.
It is also a great pain to have to regularly check both boards - I would be strongly in favour of dropping the old board.

What should " NewBoarders " do to accomplish their goal of having Larry shut down the " old ChessTalk?
Some have said they have only posted new threads now on the " new " board. Some have said they go to the old board , but no longer post replies there. Others have taken the radical position that they no longer go to the old board.
What should those of us NewBoarders do who still go to/ post on both boards? Should there be a campaign started for all NewBoarders to adopt an uncompromising position against the old board, and follow the lead of those who will no longer use the old board?
What do you think? ( I would have done a poll of Newboarders, but wasn't sure how to do it here ).

I'm with you Bob, especially if I get a stronger feeling from Larry that he would consider shutting down the old board. I feel like an idiot for initially preferring the old board! Now that I've figured out how to have threads appear as read, this new ChessTalk is bloody unbeatable for speed of checking in, reading what I want, and being ready for next scan.

I'd say the best way is to not post over there at all, and if you see something you want to reply to, post it over here in QUOTE tags and put your reply outside of the quote tags. That will mean the interesting discussions can be guaranteed to happen here, and the extra activity will draw even more people, snowballing...

For what it is worth, for the time being, while there are two boards, I will no longer post on the old board. I will do as Chris has suggested and if I see something I want to respond to over there, I'll copy it here, and respond here, and start a thread here. Maybe if more of us do that, the activity on the old board will die down ( maybe the dinosaurs over there will get tired too ), and viewers will have to come here to see what other replies are being made to their posts over here. An idea anyway, until Larry makes up his mind.
Having two boards is ridiculous (sorry Larry). Here we were complaining about the inability to keep ONE board going and now we have competing boards offered by the same place. What possible reason could there be to keep the old board? I haven't heard a good one other than "it is my board and I'll do what I want" and that doesn't really cut it.
It is a great idea to have two boards. This board has one nice feature of being able to edit posts.
An image I posted on the old board looked OK in preview mode but did not appear once posted.
The old board is full of fools who have blessedly not yet all migrated.

Mr.Bill, I do agree with your observation about there being more old-time bitterness on the old board. It's quite fascinating actually, maybe related to change adaptability?! ;)
