General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
For the 2010 CYCC, I had a frustrating time contacting Monroi, who simply refuse to answer emails. Eventually, we made a deal, and the company rep (Zeljka) who came to Windsor was very pleasant and efficient.
I didn't see the Monroi site during the event, I was too busy with other concerns, but I heard no complaints, and the games were shown on a giant screen in the parents room.
It would be interesting to hear from someone who owns a Monroi hub if they are able to get it to work consistently. The main alternative, DGT, is used in Alberta, and Quebec has a couple of boards, as Jean Hébert says.
Whether they normally would have someone on site or not at something like this ( I don't know whether they in fact do or not ), with the problems that have existed since the start, you'd think they'd by now have made sure someone was on site to do damage control! This is bad PR for their product. As someone said, for a Canadian company, you'd think they'd treat this as one of their premier events. And it is relatively a small number of boards - why the difficulty?

I have been following the games from Round 2 and 3 and 4 just fine.
There are only 14 boards and it is very simple to handle Monroi broadcast. Their technology is working fine -- sometimes (with wireless) or less-reliable internet service, there can be hiccups.
Re: CDN Closed - Monroi - Rounds 2,3 and 4 have all worked just fine!

Were you following the games at 10:30 or 11:00 this morning when many people reported that they weren't there ? And were you following the games which were displaying illegal moves and highly creative positions ? You and I probably have a different meanings for the idea of "following the games just fine"...

All 14 games appeared to be available in the drop-down menu.
The site recommends that you only display 2 boards at a time.
I can get 4 to load OK and they would "appear" to be functioning fine (with no apparent illegal moves or positions during the replay of the games)
I am unable to get 1 game to load and that is the Humphreys vs. Qin game -- no moves appear in that specific game -- but so far -- the rest appear to be broadcasting the games OK?
Obviously they have updated the games database and now I can find almost all of the games from Round 1 which were not broadcasted live from Friday night. But since then, generally speaking, the broadcast has been glitch free when viewing it here in BC on a Firefox browser.
I spend most of my time watching the games and not here on ChessTalk -- so I will head back to the site and watch some exciting Round 4 broadcast games.
So someone involved in the Canadian Closed 2009 tells us there were big problems with Monroi then. So what do we do this year to transmit games ? We again turn to Monroi to do the job ! As they say, "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
Here in Quebec, thanks to Luc Forget who owns two DGT boards and operates them, many tournaments have used that technology to transmit games, without serious problems.
I'm pretty sure that quote was Einstein... one of my favourites.
We used the DGT boards in 2004 at the Ontario Open (and possibly at the 2005 Canadian Junior although I don't recall specifically). These were the older types and were a little harder to set up, but once you get them up and running they were relatively easy to work with. Plus no matter what may screw up with the move order, it will at least be showing the correct position! :)
ChessBomb is great, but even they had problems with the Kramnik - Radjabov blitz today.
What I really like about MonRoi is the fact that you can watch 4 games simultaneously ( despite the warning box that you are not supposed to watch more than 2 ).
The boards are now available on MonRoi for Rd. 6, though the moves have not yet started coming in. Hopefully shortly that will be solved - they were supposed to start at 1:00 PM EDT.

The Monroi schedule gives 2 pm as the start of today's round. The board 1 Hansen-Noritsyn game should be a battle as there had been discussion of late as to why Noritsyn was on the Olympiad team instead of Hansen. Still, this is only one game, but the thinking will be there by players and spectators alike.
