  • Detailed Thank-Yous for 2011 Ontario HS Championship

The 2011 Ontario HS Championship was held in Kingston, and I have many people and organizations, from across the province and indeed Canada, to thank for what turned out to be a really nice event.

    1) IA Mark Dutton of Victoria gave some very useful help and advice on digital clock settings, as we were getting ready for the event. :)

    2) Executive TD Brian Profit of Belleville put together the player files, including ratings (CFC and CMA) and teams, and worked on the Rating Reports. At the last minute, he was unable to attend for the playing sessions, due to very busy work and family commitments, but made it down to Kingston for the planning meetings on Saturday, and contributed much valuable input. :)

    3) Chris Field of Toronto handled preparation and the interaction with Queen's University, for hall bookings and residence rooms, and managed the site setup. As my partner TD, he directed the progression of rounds, the tournament results data, and the awards process all very efficiently. He also chaired the planning meeting and kept it on message, while facilitating wide-ranging discussion which will lead to some important improvements for future years. :)

    4) IA Larry Bevand, Executive Director of CMA, arranged for all players' results to be rated with CMA as well as CFC, came down for the meeting, added important expertise and ideas, and indicated he would be interested in getting more involved in future, to boost the event's size and profile. :)

    5) The Ontario Chess Association made its chess sets and digital clocks available, so we had first-rate equipment for all games. :)

    6) Queen's University rented its classiest facility, Grant Hall (a beautiful century-old Neo-Gothic amphitheatre with plenty of space, a balcony, great lighting, fine accoustics, stained-glass windows, and colourful banners), its residence rooms, and largest dining hall for our group, and everything worked out very well. :)

    7) Andy Feng, of Toronto, Waterloo, and Kingston, made a huge contribution as assistant TD and energetic problem solver extraordinaire. Andy is an Accounting student at the University of Waterloo, currently doing a work term with a firm in Kingston. He is a good player who played in this event a few years ago, and an aspiring TD with good knowledge of procedures, rules, and fair play. :)

    8) Kingston MP Ted Hsu and Kingston City Councillor Rob Hutchison, both keen chess people and strong players, found time on short notice from their busy schedules to open and close the event, respectively. Media coverage from CKWS TV and the Kingston Whig-Standard newspaper was very useful and helpful. :)

    9) Two Toronto students, Stephen Dong and Jack Han, both of Pleasant View, came down the day before with Chris, to help with event preparation and site setup. :)

    10) Key organizers Serguei Ianine of UTS (Treasurer) and Vincent Lu of Don Mills Collegiate (Webmaster) both were towers of strength the entire weekend. :)
