  • Calgary International Round 7 update & Round 8 Pairings

All but one decisive game this round, Sevillano vs. Hansen was a short draw. The big news is FM Dale Haessel who continues to play well. He defeated Michael Langer with the black pieces tonight. He can still score an IM norm if he can get 1.5/2 in the last two rounds. Richard Wang had a pretty good day two, winning both his games.

The leaders with 5/7 are Kraai, Hansen and Sevillano. Tomorrow should see some interesting and competitive chess. There is still a chance to claim the Ottosen prize if they can keep the draw count down.

    Round 8 pairings will see:

    Hansen vs. Neven
    Porper vs. Kraai
    Haessel vs. Kazmaier
    Stopa vs. Langer
    Wang vs. Sevillano

Game time is 10 am MT.

FM Haessel is someone who is known for wild performance fluctuations. His playing level typically falls somewhere in the 1900-2500 range (I am not exaggerating!)
In his most recent tournament in Alberta he scored 0.5/5 so it was quite obvious that this time he would make a big come back. He was close to an IM norm before, as in the 2005 Canadian Open he missed it because he played one too many unrated players. In that event he beat GM Shabalov, drew GM Sandipan, and drew and beat a couple of IMs.

It will certainly be interesting to see if he can do it. In round 8 he will face Dan Kazmaier (2135) and his last round game will be against IM Enrico Sevillano (2510). On a given day Dale is certainly capable of scoring 1.5 against those two, the question is just whether tomorrow will be that day.

      Rounds 1-3: 8 draw, 7 decisive
      Prize announced
      Rounds 4-7: 4 draw, 16 decisive
      Coincidence?

By my count, the last 2 rounds have to see at least 7 decisive games from the 10 to get to the 66.7% decisive required. IMO Hansen and Sevillano taking a short draw while in the lead seems crazy to me but whatever. They only hurt themselves by doing this.

Its hard to predict what will happen in the last couple of rounds as sometimes the fatigue leads to bad blunders and more decisive games, while on the other hand it can also lead to more short draws.
Still, there were quite a lot of short draw refusals so far.
