Last year's CO total was 265 players - will the 2011 CO surpass that total? Looking like a good tournament - consider signing up if you haven't yet - you can play in either one big swiss ( with no acceleration ), or in one of two sections ( U 2000; U 1600 ).

Canadian Open registration Not Over 200 Yet

Hi John:

I rechecked the totals as of June 22, and you have been misled a bit by David Cohen's numbering system for pre-registrations. We're not yet over 200.

The actual total is 194:

Open - 118
U 2000 - 48
U 1600 - 28

The reason for the discrepancy, which David explained to me, is that some people registered and took up a number. Then they withdrew. David then removes their pre-registration number and name from the list, and doesn't reassign anyone to the withdrawn numbers. So far, there are 8 numbers missing in the list that is showing 202 as the last entry. I did go through the list a while ago, and the missing numbers at that time were: 19, 25, 52, 53 & 72. Since then, I guess 3 more have withdrawn ( I haven't bothered to find out what numbers they are ).

Ah, I see, said the blind man. I changed the reg list into a spreadsheet, there are currently 197 entries, missing numbers are 19, 25, 52, 53, 72, 83, 84, 100

I believe there are 225 players; some registrations were cancelled, therefore the numbers are not continuous. David Itkin was #200, btw.

I can't say, but there are the potential effects of the Canada Post Lockout to factor in. Out here, a pre-lockout parcel arrived Tuesday, but no mail to our neighbours nor ourselves today, Wednesday.

I can relate that a TD who relies on a list being final is setting him- (or her-) self up for a surprise. I have the scars to prove it! Be prepared for deletions, changes of section, and even additions.

Edit: after a bit of "research" (downloading the entry form after hitting several other pages), it is possible to interpret that they weren't accepting mail entries after 31 March. Life sure is complex.

Canadian Open Update – Late Registrations to be Allowed – Late Fee

Article ( confirmed by David Cohen ) in the July 1 Issue of the Scarborough Community of Toronto Chess News & Views, Issue # 12-21:

Canadian Open Update – Late Registrations to be Allowed – Late Fee

As of 12:00 PM, Thursday, June 30, there were 231 pre-registrations:

Op/U2000/U1600

231 players (134/61/36)

Female 20 (13/4/3)
Under-14 33 (16/13/4)
Under-18 22 (18/2/2)
Senior 53 (26/16/11)

Registrations formally ended yesterday, June 30 – the organizers wanted to have as many players as possible registered by that date, so they would know the numbers they were dealing with. But they recognize that there may be reasons why some want to play, but for legitimate reasons, could not register by June 30. So they are extending the time for registration, but there will be a $ 20 late fee ( the registration fee was $ 195 ). The tournament starts at 6:00 PM Sat., July 9, and runs to Sun., July 17.
