North American Youth Chess Championships (standings)

http://www.chesseducators.com/northa...tandings5.html shows Nikita Gusev tying for 1st-2nd with John Hughes after 7 rounds. Joey Qin wasn't far behind with 5/7, trailing by a 1/2 point & Regina Kalaydina stays on par at 3.5/7with Chang Yun.

Agastya Kalra & Dennis Tismenko also each broke even with 3.5/7 in the http://www.chesseducators.com/northa...tandings4.html group. In the same age group for women, Rebecca Giblon also picked up the same score: http://www.chesseducators.com/northa...tandings4.html

Hong Rui Zhu tied for 1st-2nd with Michael Lim with 5.5/7 & Razvan Preotu was not too far behind in the http://www.chesseducators.com/northa...tandings4.html group with 4.5/7, losing to his Canadian competitor in the final round. In the women's group, Melissa Giblon & Aleksandra Milicevic each picked up 3/7: http://www.chesseducators.com/northa...tandings4.html

Daniel Zotkin placed tied for 3rd-6th in the http://www.chesseducators.com/northa...tandings4.html with 5/7. Constance Wang scored 3.5/7 in the women's event. Ljudmila Milicevic (3/7) & Mathanhe Kaneshalingam (2.5/7) also competed in that group, and were paired up in the 6th round: http://www.chesseducators.com/northa...tandings4.html

In the U8 group, Jeannie Zhang scored 4.5/7 & Taylor Zhang trailed her in the http://www.chesseducators.com/northa...tandings4.html
by a 1/2 point.

An excellent job for our Canadian contingent, & hopefully they've enjoyed their New York experience!

I got back near midnight last night, after trying to short cut through the back roads of upstate New York. I saved maybe 15 minutes, as rain hit at sundown, which made me slow down! Still, it was a wonderful drive after a thrilling almost-week at the NAYCC.

I am scrambling to prepare for the Eastern Ontario Open, so a more complete report would be forthcoming after that, but I just wanted to take a moment to express my pride in the Canadian team. I was the arbiter in the special room that had the top 2 boards from each section. As the last round was about to begin, I noted that a full 20% of the top kids in the room were from Canada, over double the registration percentage.

As the round progressed, it was a bittersweet feeling as the boards and pieces were packed into boxes, even while the remaining games raged on to determine final placing.

At one point, one of the other arbiters came and told me that every other game in the other playing rooms had already concluded, and only my room was left. I look across the now eerily almost-empty room at the last 2 games of the whole NAYCC, and 3 of those 4 players were Canadian, battling hard! Team Canada, awesome display of chess spirit!
