  • Canadian Chess Hall of Fame 2011 - Povilas Vaitonis

The presentation was on Saturday (2011 July 9) attended by a huge Vaitonis' family, chess friends, and friends.

E.Rozentalis showed a game Thorvaldsson-Vaitonis (Munich Ol. 1936), and he gave some story about the opening name - Volga Gambit, somebody complained - It's Benko. The whole-knowledge Wiki says:
    Possibly the first to use the now-standard move order 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 was Thorvaldsson-Vaitonis, Munich Olympiad 1936.
Thus my caption for this particular photo - Vaitonis Gambit

[I don't like to shoot videos. It takes ages to edit/prepare them.] The rough file with a A.Vaitonis talk (the end portion) about his father

The short story was told about his passion for fishing too. :)
