  • Edmonton International lectures days 2/3

On Monday, July 25th, GM Shabalov continued his lecture series at the Edmonton Chess Club. He gave a 2 hour lecture with club players on the topic on when to play fxg3 and when to take hxg3. He covered all the four exceptions to capturing towards the centre. Afterwards, Alexander played a simul against 15 players. We played with clocks (1 hour each) and he even offered the white colour to all those who wanted it. The time was probably not quite enough as GM Shabalov lost a couple of games on the clock, most notably to the oldest member of the club-Ferenc Borloi (the final clock times showed 49 minutes for Ferenc against 0 for GM Shabalov). The other two people to win against Alexander were: Damon Macleod and yours truly; however, I will claim the honours of being the only one who actually won on the board.

Day 3 of the lecture series featured a four hour discussion of the pawn sacrifice in situations in which such a sacrifice doesn't produce any immediate results. After that, FM Alisa Melekhina gave a one hour lecture on the Anti-Sicilian systems.

Now that the lecturing is over, the battles will begin tonight.
