  • World Mind Sports

GM Mark Paragua (Philippines) won the Blitz event.

Many Canadians will remember him as the young man who scored his first IM norm at the North Bay International Open, which ran annually from 1994 to 1999.

There do not appear to be any Canadians in the chess part of the World Mind Sports championship at Beijing. The local (Nanaimo) newspaper ran an article about a person who was going to compete in Bridge. I don't know about other Mind Sports disciplines.

The initial invite for the event intimated at free airfares, but a more recent story said that the Russian sponsor who was going to pay for airfares withdrew support. I wonder how it all panned out, money-wise. Seems like this was a fascinating opportunity.

I know for a fact that one of the ex BC girls U10 champion is going in couple days there to participate in Chinese chess tournament. I will post later if I can find any more details.

Thanks for the link, Egis. So if I'm not mistaken, Canada is / will be represented at the World Mind Sports Games by:

        19 participants in Go
        49 Bridge
        14 Xiangqi (Chinese Chess)
1 Draughts (I assume that's 10x10 International Checkers; there are at least four kinds of Checkers, one of which was invented in Quebec!).
        0 Chess

Canada has at least one chess player on those lists - Nicolas L'Ecuyer (FQE rating of 1857). He is a "World Master" at bridge. (that ranks below "World Grand Master", "World Life Master", and "World International Master". Canada has about 9 WLM's and 4 WIM's (no WGM's)).
