  • Chess by the numbers in Canada -- this busy August 1st Long weekend cross country!

Chess is thriving in Canada right now.

A quick glance at the numbers and things are hopping everywhere.

In BC, we have 2 sections in the BC Open in Vancouver, 20 Open and 28 in the Under 1800 for a 48-player turnout.

In Alberta, at the 6th Edmonton International, there are 10 title players in the round robin Top section with another 24 players in the Reserves for a total turnout of 34 players.

In Quebec, the Championnat Ouvert du Québec 2011 was just completed yesterday with the incredible performance of IM Nikolay Noritsyn who topped the 31 Player Open Swiss section with another 250 + players in the other sections -- so about 300 players in PQ.

And further, in Ontario, at the Kitchener Chess Festival, we find 6 players battling it out in the Canadian Seniors Chess Championship with another 42 players in the Canadian Amateur Chess Championship .

That is more than 400 players across the country pushing the wood at the mid-summer mark (end of July beginning of August).

The Chess Federation of Canada has recently changed the website. Take a look and follow even more events at this link!

    Congratulations Canada!

With all the events this summer there should be lots of material for the next few issues of the CFC email magazine. The members should be looking forward to those issues.
