In a parallel chess universe, where the Olympiad team won bronze in the 90s, there's a Canadian IM called John Wright...

Marcus, thanks so much for posting this. I met John in the late '60s at the London Y chess club. In the linked interview, John mentioned that Jean Hebert was a gracious opponent. I think everyone in the club thought of John the same way. He was certainly an inspiration for all of the younger players and it's wonderful to read that he still loves chess.

John, if you happen to read this, here are some London chess names, from 40 or so years ago, to take you down memory lane:
Jack "do not take this game too seriously, young man" Ronean, Richard May, Bob Kaczmarek, Walter Kaczmarek, Stan Navickas, Endel Tooming, Peter Murray, David Jackson, Ted Durrant, Dan Surlan, Peter Flanagan, Chris Aziz, Stefan Jacek, Ernst "chess is chess" Spricis, Sid "alright Spricis, alright" Barber....and on and on.

Best wishes to you, John. I hope you enjoy this new stage in your chess career!

John Wright was indeed a gracious opponent, both when we played face-to-face and in Correspondence Chess. He is also first among the authors of Diamond Dust, the book that I edited and Inside Chess published about the CCCA's first grandmaster (CC) tournament, CCCA-60. I am glad that he is back in circulation again!

John Wright currently has the sole lead in the Annexe Chess Club First Anniversary Swiss, http://annexchessclub.com/2011/09/an...swiss-results/

Oops, I wrote "Annexe" out of my old British-English habit which I don across the border, but I see it only has one 'e'.

it's nice to see an accurate assessment of correspondence chess

Make that 3.0/3 for John Wright at Ye Olde Annexe Chesse Clubbe - and check his Round-3 game with Rolando Renteria...

If I had known that the game was happening Monday evening between John Wright and Rolando Renteria I would have stayed a little longer just for the pleasure of finally meeting John Wright! I started tournament chess in London, Ontario the year after he left and alas never met him. Congratulations on a strong downtown Toronto chess club (finally!) and I hope it lasts many years! Its nice to see some of the old guard still playing including the chess legend Lawrence Day, and former masters Dave Southam, Hugh Siddeley, and Steve Fairbairn. I really enjoyed playing in the Toronto Thanksgiving. Kudos to Ted, Brian, David, Marcus, Zjelka, and associates.
