General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
No, I am not entitled to royalties. Some (I would say roughly 40-50%) of the time that I was working on it was on "CFC time" (i.e. during the work hours when I was employed at the CFC). The other half or so was on my own time. Some day I would like to do a re-write and have it distributed for free by ... Chess n Math. Larry is a man of integrity. I have always had good dealings with him over the 15+ years I have known him.

:) Responding to a question directed to me from Peter McKillop:
I haven't gotten involved with serious chess debate on any topics recently, including the serious Ontario Chess Association issues around potentially misused Trillium Grant funds, for several reasons:
1) other than the Chess 'N Math Association, I am largely disgusted with the very questionable ethics, poor team chemistry, clashing agendas, broken promises, recycled losers, and lack of a big-picture plan, which currently characterize far too much of Canadian chess organization, and having spent a lot of time and effort in recent years as an active contributor, such as writer, organizer, arbiter, Governor, etc, trying to build positive elements, and identify and solve problems, without that much success, I have not surprisingly concluded that my time and effort are much better spent elsewhere;
2) my chess efforts right now are directed towards organizing the 2009 Canadian Post-Secondary Chess Championships at Queen's University in Kingston, January 16-18, and in selecting and preparing the Queen's teams for that event. This is a significant event and we want to do a great job with it;
3) I have a very major 'great matter', a monstrous scandal which I am investigating at Queen's, and the university leadership has asked me during this past week to work with them on identifying and solving the problems, an offer I have accepted. This is going to take a lot of concentrated time and effort in the coming months.
However, I am reserving the option of rejoining the debate on major Canadian chess issues a bit later on, perhaps sometime in 2009. I also want to give David Lavin, a highly qualified returning figure in Canadian chess, some time and a chance to make his mark with the CFC as its new president.
Oops, I was not aware that the chess manual was for sale. Thanks for pointing that out. In my short time as ED, I am not aware of anyone actually paying for it. We do however make a download version available free to Teachers who request it. You can find that on the site under "chess & schools". And they do request it frequently.
I see below Tom has acknowledged that he wrote it primarily on CFC time and that no royalties are due.
Thanks for the information, Kerry and Erik. I'm sure there are a lot of people with a lot of good ideas on how that money might have been spent. For example, for round numbers let's say York Region District School Board has 200 elementary schools (I think this number is a little high but it makes for easy figuring). Consider the following, just for discussion, as an injection into the school system in exchange for the school board's commitment to including chess in the junior grades' curricula:
1. 200 schools x 30 CFC "school tubes" per school x $10 (approx) per tube = $60,000.
2. 200 schools x 2 CFC "Tom O'Donnell's Manual for Schools" per school
x $25/manual = $10,000.
3. engage CMA to run a train-the-trainer program for the school board - say, 2 teachers
per school with 40 teachers per training session at, say, $1,500 per session (don't
know if this figure is realistic but presumably the board would be providing the pre-
-mises for free) = $15,000.
Presumably the CFC would have been a few thousand dollars better off based on its mark up on the manuals and school tubes, CMA would have been happy and the board and its students would have been happy. And you'd still have $35,000 to spend.
Thanks Peter for your plan - I love it. Barry's Trillium Activities did include one or two one-day training sessions with York resident Roman Pelts (I attended one) but the 3-volume school manual cost teachers $100, hence only made it into a couple of schools. An opportunity to connect with interested teachers was squandered. Pelts system is similar to Chess 'n Math. I assume that Roman was paid. I think what was missing was how to promote chess to kids/parents and on how to run clubs and tournaments.
You could add a point 4: organizing 9 city one-day championships with no-money prizes. Assuming a rental fee of $500 and total costs per event of $2,000 that would be $18,000. If 50 clocks and sets would be provided for these events add $4,000. That's $22,000 of the 35,000 left. Money left can be used for cellphone, website and to pay the fund raiser to contact local organizations and media to seek future sponsors.
