The CCC Post ( Week of October 21 -27/11 ).
Q:Some say organized chess in Canada is “ broken “. There is nothing worth saving in the current system. The problems run too deep to be legislated away. So why is the Cooperative Chess Coalition ( CCC ) wasting its time rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic? Isn’t a complete restructuring and redefinition of Canadian chess mandate required?
A: CCC believes the basic chess structure in Canada is sound ( we Canadians are relatively successful in setting up our systems – “ peace, order and good government “ and all that ). So we see no need for it to be totally abandoned. And there is no member groundswell for such radical action. But reform is required – an incremental and modest approach will be effective over time. We need to figure out how to better develop and support Canadian chess clubs, and tournament organizers, the two building blocks of Canadian chess ( internet chess is a potential third building block, but the competition is fierce, and the chance of CFC success in this direction is currently unclear ). Our over-arching chess structures do not “ create “ chess; they are there to coordinate and support the creation of chess-playing opportunities by and for the grassroots – both for CFC-rated and unrated chess.
