    Marcus,

You are right, Annex should play with white. Sorry for confusion.

This is how commands were placed:
    1. Chess Academy
    2. Knights of Chess
    3. Annex
    4. Willowdale

    and this is games' schedule:
    Round
    1 1:4 2:3
    2 2:4 3:1
    3 4:3 1:2

Numbers 1 and 2 play two matches with white, one match with black.

        Hi Marcus:

I have a beef on this " club " team league.

As far as I can tell, there are a number of players who are " members " of the clubs they are representing, in name only ( if they do have proof of paying a membership ). Some seem to have, as far as I can tell, very limited connection to the club, if any. So I object to it being called a " clubs " league.

I am all for the concept though - but I think there has to be a minimum connection standard to the club, before someone can play for them. Much the same way Scarborough CC has an " activity rule " for members to play in the top Championship Section ( have to have played 10 rated games since Sept. /11 ).

But I like to see elite players getting a chance to play each other. So why can't the League be simply a GTA Teams League. Clubs can enter their teams, but so can anyone else ( a corporation; a school club - highschool, primary school, university, community college, private institutes ); a community centre; etc. And even allow individuals to form their own team and name it and enter it. This would reach many more players than only the four current league members. We might even have trouble finding a space for all the teams if they all played in one place on one night, like now.

In a league like that, I would strongly lobby SCC to put in a team, where we haven't for this alleged " clubs " league.

          Hey, Bob

All our ACC team players are bona fide members of the club. I'm not sure about the other clubs. I guess it's up to the GTCL, or the individual clubs, to stipulate or enforce that.

But it's fun to have such high-calibre chess going on. And there's never enough team chess going on in the city - outside of scholastic - in my opinion. I loved the KW teams active last spring.

This mentality often prevents the best players from playing in team/club matches and ultimately kills the league/team concept as a way to foster a stimulating competition between clubs as is being done almost everywhere else in the world. Being a member of club X is a simple formality. Clubs who want to be represented by strong players simply provides these memberships free (and often pay fees!), if needed. In return these players play for and represent the club, which for me goes well over "the minimum connection standard" one can have with a club.

League play can be a strong tool to dynamise and enrich club life. But if individuals are allowed to make up teams outside of organised clubs, it defeats the purpose and the benefit. Clubs should go after the strong players to make up their teams and involve them in their activities. This is one important tool to keep many strong players active instead of losing them for long periods and sometimes for ever.
At the same time to allow for more players in, it is perfectly possible to have severals league levels (First League, Second league, etc.) with more teams from the same clubs.

Jean, I have to agree totally with Bob Armstrong. If we were to have a club match, Scarborough vs. Mississauga, it would lose all meaning if it was simply their hired gun versus our hired gun. I would want it to be their real club members versus our real club members.

It is better what we had this year than a year before :p

So when could we see a match S vs M over 20 boards? ;)

Re: GTCL Clubs' League vs Teams' League

                          Hi Jean:

I think you are wrong re the relationship between parachuted in elite players playing for the club, and the enthusiasm of the ordinary class player members.

Class players are not stupid. They know the elite players are not members of their club ( don't play in regularly rated tournaments ). So for them, the great club rivalry you talk about doesn't exist. What does it matter to their concept of club, that a lot of strangers " used " their club to get to play other elite players. There is no pride or shame in the ordinary club members for wins or losses in such a " club league ".

As I said, I am happy to create opportunities for elite players to play each other. As I said, the GTCL should change the " club league " to a " Metro team league " where anyone or organization or company or club could enter their team [ and if there was a good response, and clear level differences between teams, then have a tiered league ( elite ( over 2000 ), class 1999 & Under ) ]. Any thoughts on such a league for 2012-13 in Toronto?

When big clubs ignored a GTCL clubs' competition, a "club" took another meaning "team". If there would be more CLUBS willing to participate it would be better for everybody. Did I mention that there was no entry fee to play in the League? Thanx once more to the Annex CC. (just a matter of fact - an adult one-night fee at the ACC is 5$, what was waved for League participants.)

Re: GTCL Clubs' League - SCC Non-Participation

                                Hi Egis:

I felt that the way the " club " teams were assembled made a mockery of the title : GTCL " Club " League - players with little connection to the club were conscripted to play. I don't know why SCC decided not to participate ( I am not on the executive ). But there was an announcement asking any member interested to speak to the executive - nothing happened. Seems the ordinary SCC class members were not very interested ( we do not have the number of elite players we had last year, and two of them played for other teams since SCC was not putting in a team ).

I still think a " Metro TEAM League " should be considered for next year. As I have said, I would actively lobby within SCC to put a team into sucha league.
