    The 2011 Southern Alberta Open is underway. The top half is strong with several strong masters in the field. The winner qualifies to the 2012 Alberta Closed.

    Only one upset in the first round, Len Steele drew with junior Derek Zhang.

    The rating gap closes for round 2 and the pairings are more evenly matched.

      Round 2 was saw two amazing results on the top two boards as Jean-Francois Jean upset IM Edward Porper while Itohan Gold defeated NM Alex Yam. Top 3 boards from round 3 are now online.

        Good work by J-F and Gold in round 2 for their upset victories!

        Will make it interesting now as it should be a dog fight for the rest of the tournament.

          An exciting tournament where anything can still happen. Masters Kazmaier, Robichaud and Nguyen are in the lead with perfect scores. A notable upset was Chris White (1734) over Roy Yearwood (2194), Roy is a bit rusty having not played in a while.

              Round 4 saw a few upsets, namely Lukes Beaudry over Ed Porper, with black and another upset victory by Chris White over Vlad Rekhson.

                NM Kazmaier sweeps the field!

                Congrats to Dan Kazmaier who built the picket fence, going 5/0 to claim 1st prize and qualifies to the 2012 Alberta Closed.

                Dale Haessel pulled up his socks and tied for 2-3rd along with Martin Robichaud with 4/5.
