Universities Open Championship of Montreal, an unique students chess event co-hosted by Polyjeux, McGill Chess Club and Concordia Chess Club and sponsored by Coopoly bookstore and Quebec Chess Federation, was hold at Galeries Rolland of Ecole polytechnique. There were 39 players in total which include, 1 FIDE Master: Louie Jiang, 2 National Masters: Raven Sturt and Keith MacKinnon, and 4 experts: Douglas Stanley(USCF expert), Felix Dumont, Julien Hirth and the McGill Computer Science professor Daniel Pomerantz(USCF expert).
After 5 rounds of intense competition, NM Raven Sturt, came from NYC but studying at McGill, won the tournament with an impressive perfect score of 5/5 by beating NM Keith MacKinnon at the last round. Unfortunately, FM Louie Jiang didn't have a chance to play against the 2 NMs above because of a careless draw in the 1st round against another player. But Louie won all the other games that he played and got 2nd place with a score of 4.5/5!
The third place was hard to decide because of 4 players(Keith MacKinnon, Douglas Stanley, Felix Dumont and Martin Dobrev) who tied with a score of 4/5. After a 3 round of Armageddon round Robin tiebreak, Martin Dobrev got eliminated, but the 3 other players tied with 2/3 each!! (Keith beats Douglas, Douglas beat Felix, and Felix beats Keith) Therefore, another Armageddon round Robin was added where Keith defeated both Felix and Douglas. Hence, Keith MacKinnon won the 3rd place!
As for the team trophies and medals prizes, we took the score of top 3 players from each university and compute them, which gives:
1st place: McGill University with Raven Sturt(5/5), Keith MacKinnon(4/5) and Douglas Stanley(4/5)
2nd place: Concordia University with Martin Dobrev(4/5), Cirous Sadeghi(3/5) and Manju Kazi(3/5)
3rd place: Ecole Polytechnique of UdeM with Alexandre Lavalle(3.5/5), Julien Hirth(3/5) and Munger Steve(2.5/5).
Congratulation to all winners! And thanks to everyone's participation!!
