Q: The relationship between an organization and its members can be measured by the extent of member volunteer involvement. Outside of the CFC Governors, CFC seems to have almost no other member volunteers involved in administration. Is the relationship between CFC and its members unhealthy at the moment?
A: The Cooperative Chess Coalition ( CCC ) can only list 2 member volunteers outside of governors: the CFC Handbook Updater; the U 16 Olympiad Coordinator. And there appears to be a member cooperating with the Rating Auditor on research. But there are no non-governor volunteers on any of the committees so far as CCC is aware, except for parental involvement in the WYCC, and on the Youth Advisory Committee. And re this committee, there is a move afoot to form a smaller new governor-dominated “ Youth Committee “, and turn the current Advisory Committee, into a Youth Committee Advisory Group. CCC feels CFC makes insufficient effort to involve members in its operation – there are no ordinary members on either of the new Long-Term Planning or the Membership Drive Committees. There is no volunteer member Fund-raising Committee to our knowledge. Members have to be given real opportunities to affect decision-making, and CFC must be pro-active in terms of member volunteers if it wants to get their involvement.
