  • Canadian University Championships at Western

We have a good sporting crowd of about 80 players on 19 teams at this year's event. After 3 rounds Western leads the Open Division with 3 match points. Waterloo and McGill follow with 2. The morning round will be key:

    Western - McGill
    Waterloo - Toronto
    Queens - Carlton
    Guelph - Brock

Can someone tell Shiyam that I posted these after all? I told him I wasn't going to bother tonite.

The Reserve section has been much less predictable due to some strong unrated players. Western also leads this group with 3, followed closely by McGill B and C!

    Reserves
    McGill B - Western
    McGill C - Waterloo
    Guelph - McMaster
    Toronto C - Brock
    Queens - Ottawa

    Hi Hal:

Is there a Toronto B team - if so, it is not in the pairings. Does it have a bye, and that's why it is not there?

Right you are Bob - the Toronto B team has drawn the bye this round in the 11 team reserves.

        Re: Canadian Post-Secondary ( ?? ) Championships at Western

        Hi Hal:

Supplementary Question! Why is this tournament referred to as the University Championship, rather than the Post-Secondary Championship, as it has been in the past? Weren't community colleges and CEGEP's also invited to put in a team, and so it was broader than just " universities "? I recognize that only universities have responded, but that shouldn't lead to a name change of the tournament from " Post-Secondary Championship ", should it?

Is there a web site for this Championship? Are any of the games on-line? Can you let us know how individual team members are performing, in addition to how the teams are doing? Do you expect that any of the games will be posted on-line? Just curious.

Don, the post-secondary tournament has historically been a no-frills type of event. Most if not all the players are paying most of their own costs, including travel, accomodation, entry, and meals, with some schools perhaps getting some financial help from their student governments and / or their administration.

But there are usually quite a few strong players involved, so the top board games would certainly be of interest! As TD / Organizer for this event several times in recent years, I collected as many gamescores as I could, and posted the best games to chess5.com. Not sure if Hal Bond and / or Western's organizers have plans to do this or not. The peak for me was a few years ago, when IA / GMC / FM Jonathan Berry used one of the games I had posted, along with the chesstalk results data, and devoted his terrific Globe and Mail column for an event report. But he needs that info no later than Tuesday of this week for Saturday's Globe, if memory serves!! :) :)

There were 58 games made available last year - they are all in Canbase. Hopefully - there will be some this year as well.

Thak you for the information. I know that there were a lot of good players attending this year so seeing some of the games would be great.

                    Final Standings?

Could someone post the winners for both Championship and Reserves? Even better, the final standings? Thx.

                    Bob

                      Re: Final Standings?

We left a little early, but Western ran away with the championship section pretty quickly... it wasn't really much of a contest (having a team with 3 titled players does that... the "Miami Heat of University Chess" as Shiyam called it!).

I'm sure either Hal or someone who didn't leave early will post the results soon.

Hugh, I don't think many games will get posted, as carbons were not used... hopefully some players will post some of their own games somewhere.

                        Re: Final Standings?

The event has been submitted to the CFC for rating. Congratulation to Western for sweeping the Open and narrowly missing gold in the Reserves. McGill was also very impressive. Three teams entered and a strong showing in both divisions. McGill has first option for next year's event and they are pumped!

                        3.McGill 3.0

Keith played quite well. Raja took the gold medal on 1st board, but he finished ahead of Bindi, Christian and Keith on tiebreak, They each scored 3.5.

I wonder if one day some organizers will understand that without gamescores their events kind of vanish for ever as soon as it is over.
