General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Sorry I didn't get the results posted up Sunday evening but after putting everything away on completion of the tournament, I forgot the standings for the three sections and thought that I would get them up tonight after our club meeting. However, Hans Jung has already posted the results on an earlier post, so there is no need to duplicate the results here. The cross tables for the event should be on the CFC website in a day or two when the ratings are completed.
Incidently, the tournament ended up with 77 players. As a result, we were able to increase the prize fund by $30 for first, second, and third place in each section.
There were a few problems with pairings set up by SwissSys but they were corrected to everyone's satisfaction by our pairings director, Tim Knechtel, and the tournament proceeded without any further incidents of any kind.
All in all, I believe the players enjoyed themselves, us organizers learned what we can do to improve the next time, and we hope to see a good attendance for our Active tournament on 21 April, Saturday. Information on that tournament will be posted shortly.
This was an excellent event. Thanks to all the TDs and organizers.
One question, are the games going to be available on chesstalk as they are for most KW events? The reason I ask is that I forgot my SD card for my Monroi in my laptop computer back in Windsor before the tournament and when I tried to transfer from the internal memory of the Monroi to the SD card I managed to erase the games without them appearing in the list of games saved despite messages that suggested otherwise. I have managed to reconstruct two of the five games and about half of a third so far but it would help if the games are posted to confirm my recollections.
A AuCC member gave the interview about the event - his second chess tournament :)
This was my second tournament so I don’t have too much to compare it with but I thought that the overall organization was great: separate rooms for all different sections, chess sets, clocks and water provided. On Sunday, right before the last round, they held a memorial for the late Richard Riedstra-a co-founder of the KW Chess club and a great ambassador for the game.
This was an excellent event. Thanks to all the TDs and organizers.

Hi Vlad,
Thanks for inquiring. Kai will be posting the games on this forum over the next couple of weeks. Keep coming back for more!
Thanks for inquiring. I was playing in my 10th weekend tournament, and was busy analyzing my losses in between rounds. Unfortunately, this took away from me noticing the various interesting things going on.
Maybe uneventful is a bliss. We are one of the few clubs that can brag about playing in City Hall. We provided clocks and sets and the lighting was excellent. There were no need for TD interventions.
I played a Cochrane Gambit in my round 5 game, but I doubt people who come to this forum want to see a 1700 discussing his games.
Perhaps one of the masters would like to discuss his games? I thought Mike Ivanov's game from Round 1 looked interesting. I am sure GM Bator's games were interesting as well.
Round 1 was 60 minutes/player + Fischer-type 30 seconds/move increment; in rounds 2-5, each side got an extra half-hour at move 1. Most games are rounds 1-2, except for Nicole's scoresheets that were bound together (she used a different colour of pen for each round to record, and yellow ink is a bit of a challenge to read <winks>).
If Tony or Ralph or Hans or another club organizer wishes to provide commentary to the games, then it can be deferred to one of them. Another series of posts might not occur until after this mid-week.
Hi Egidijus,
...
Did you analyze any of the games with Radu? Perhaps there is a game you would like to discuss here?
We looked thru them after the tournament. Now he prepared two games with his own commentaries reinforced with F13 and published at http://www.aurorachessclub.ca/?p=897
Be aware - they are ~1200 games, don't expect masterpieces.
